REVELEY CLASSROOM BUILDING in Moscow, Idaho by Patano Studio Architecture

Wednesday, May 20th, 2015

Article source: Patano Studio Architecture

Initial site visits at the University of Idaho Pitkin Nursery revealed hoop houses, metal sheds and stacks of planter boxes. Beginning with the idea of a wood box floating on the undulating sea of the Palouse, the design team set out to stitch together the program, landscape and the materiality of Idaho forest products. The college wanted to extend their public outreach in addition to nursery research functions. The outstretched ramps and decks reach out to the landscape and invite the public and students to the building. The Sales Office was pulled through the wood screen as a way to express itself beyond the functions of classroom, offices, and social gathering. The weathering cedar wood screen that stands off the building was imagined as a modern western storefront. The repetition of stacked boxes was intriguing; we saw that as the piece that expressed the transition from working nursery to classroom. The cedar wood screen is the threshold element for faculty and students to step through the gap between the two elements; wood screen and black box.

Micro-apartment in Berlin, Germany by spamroom + johnpaulcoss

Tuesday, May 19th, 2015

Article source: spamroom + johnpaulcoss

The design brief for this Berlin flat renovation, in the district of Moabit, not only included the challenge of sensitively updating an Altbau (early 1900’s), but included the added element of its charming small size – measuring just 21sqm.

Like many buildings of its era, the original layout of the flat had been two very small but separate rooms, presumably one of them being a kitchen, with a shared toilet located in an outbuilding downstairs. In an effort to modernise the flat a previous owner had substituted the former kitchen with a more convenient private bathroom. This had the added effect of unbalancing the overall proportions of living/sleeping/cooking/washing space in the flat.

Collaborative Life Sciences Building & Skourtes Tower in Portland, Oregon by SERA Architects and CO Architects

Sunday, May 17th, 2015

Article source: SERA Architects and CO Architects

As Design Architects and Interior Designers, CO Architects worked closely with Executive Architect SERA Architects to create the design for the Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB), which embodies and helps achieve the goals of an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional campus. The building does so in the form of a 12-story complex with 500,000 square feet of space for classrooms, lecture halls, and laboratories for research and teaching, including medical simulation laboratories for high-tech, team-based learning. The building is conceived as an innovative model of interdisciplinary health sciences education and research, engaging students, faculty, and pedestrians through a concept of “health science on display.” Slated to open July 2014, CLSB, which is targeting LEED Platinum, will also be a striking new landmark on Portland’s South Waterfront.

The “Familienzentrum im Steinpark” kindergarten in Freising, Germany by neuburger, bohnert und müller Architekten

Saturday, May 16th, 2015

Article source: neuburger, bohnert und müller Architekten

Design concept

The project was gained through a competition won in 2010. The task was to design a kindergarten for eight groups of children with a multipurpose hall, a dining hall and a staff room.

The polygonal shape of the area available for construction and the idea behind the design of putting the various rooms in separate buildings, creating a kind of “children’s village”, led to the star-shaped design of the facility, and to the placement of the different age-groups into individual and structurally separated buildings. Each unit – crèche, kindergarten, day-care centre, utility and staff – is given its own building. They are connected with each other by means of a central all-purpose hall, which we called the “Piazza”, and which is the heart of the child-care facility. What results is a subdivided pavilion in the midst of a treed park. Stations for play and educational purposes are distributed around the remaining garden.

“House with four houses” in Portugal by Prod architecture & design

Friday, May 15th, 2015

Article source: Prod architecture & design

This holiday house for a family of four is located in the north of Portugal. It’s shape is defined by the same number of individual volumes. They have similar dimensions but distinct orientations. Three of the volumes are orthogonally organized around a core, whilst a fourth rotates to match the direction of an existing neighbouring building. The proximity between the two constructions led to a desired dialogue. The modest dimensions of the existing building determined the scale of the house while the vernacular identity influenced its layout. Each volume has a two slope roof. Besides emphasizing its individuality it enabled to increase the plasticity of the composition.
