Cliff Dwelling in Austin, Texas by Specht Harpman

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Article source: Specht Harpman

Suspended on a narrow limestone ridge halfway down a cliff overlooking Lake Austin, this home builds upon the frame of an existing 1970s-era structure. The renovation re-works the processional sequence into and through the house making it habitable for an elderly couple, enhancing engagement with the dramatic site, and incorporating elements that have personal importance to the owners.

Weleda North America by Specht Harpman

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Article source: Specht Harpman

Specht Harpman designed Weleda’s North American headquarters within the shell of a 19th-century factory along the Hudson River. One primary design intention was to expose and highlight the raw beauty of the original heavy timber structure, its brick walls, and large windows. Our interventions respect the character of the original building, while clearly registering a new use.

West Lake Hills in Texas by Specht Harpman

Thursday, May 14th, 2015

Article source: Specht Harpman

This house positions itself as a backdrop to a spectacular site, with a dense canopy of trees in front and steep ravine in back. Our goal was to preserve all of the site’s large live oaks while creating a sense of transparency that allows the landscape to flow through the living spaces.

Villa Arkö in Arkösund, Sweden by Marge Arkitekter AB

Saturday, May 9th, 2015

Article source: Marge Arkitekter AB

Villa Arkö is a summer house situated on an island in the archipelago of Norrköping that will also have the possibility to house the family over Christmas and fall vacations. A steep slant towards south east with a marvelous view is the benchmark for the placement and the form of the villa. The house contains of an archetypical basic shape with a high-pitched roof completely covered in cedar wood which over time will get a silver grey color and interact with the surrounding cliff landscape.  A glassed lower volume with sedum roofing and terraces is added on and is thereby creating a building which is following the decrease of the slant.  The in-between spaces of the volumes creates out-door spaces in different cardinal directions, on different levels, with and without roofs. Sliding sun shields (with inbuilt mosquito net for the bed rooms) can cover in and protect the house from weather and wind.

Rakafot school grounds in Kiryat Bialik, Israel by BO LANDSCAPE

Thursday, May 7th, 2015

Article source: BO LANDSCAPE

About two weeks after construction was complete on the Rakafot School, for which we were the landscape architects, and the opening of the school year, we received a surprising phone call: “I wanted your opinion on adding frogs to the school’s ‘Winter Pond.’ It was the agriculture teacher “We received complaints about mosquitoes, and it seems to be the right way to stop them is by using frogs. Besides, it will be wonderful to hear their croaks along with the children’s loud and cheerful voices.” “It’s a great idea,” we hastened to assure her, with a fantastic inner feeling, “yes, that works.”
