Metal Hut-Lucky Bar in Beijing, China by Robot 3 Studio

May 2nd, 2017 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Robot 3 Studio

Each ring road of Beijing is a rough division of social class. The invisible wall made up of power and wealth divides Beijing into pieces of fixed territories, some of which are inaccessible for majority of people in their whole life. Each territory has a stable hierarchical structure and complicated codes. Design is the way to overcome the obstacles and crack the code.

Ar de Rio Bar Esplanade in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal by Menos é Mais Arquitectos Associados, lda

May 2nd, 2017 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Menos é Mais Arquitectos Associados, lda

Architecture is not built without matter as it imposes a physuical limit.

The limits of this object reside in the precise definition of its structural ‘parti’ as much as in the desire of achieveing a limitless state.

The brief asked for a versatile space, protected from the seasonal changes of weather but open to the river breeze in warmer days.

The condition of its openings is such that the object becomes with ease a ‘covered’ esplanade.

False Bay Writer’s Cabin in Washington by Olson Kundig

May 2nd, 2017 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Olson Kundig

This five-hundred-square-foot cabin serves as a private writer’s retreat and guest cottage. The owners asked for a space that felt connected to its island setting—the mild climate, scenic views, and proximity to wildlife. At the same time, they needed a structure that could be easily secured when not in use.

La Cardinale in Montréal, Canada by L. McComber

April 30th, 2017 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: v2com

For a long time, this semi-detached house built in the 1950s in Montréal’s Ville-Saint-Laurent neighbourhood was home to a family of three young children. Over the years, many extensions were added to its aging structure. At the back, its broken-up spaces had only one opaque door and four small windows. Built without a foundation and worn by time, the annexes in the backyard were keeping the abundant natural light from coming into the kitchen. After the children fled the coop, the house was due to undergo major renovations, particularly to meet the needs of the owner’s new lifestyle. The owner entrusted his project to L. McComber architects with three goals in mind: open the living spaces, make the most of the natural light and garden view, and preserve the spirit of this family home filled with memories.

The project consisted in the refurbishment of the existing school building and extension with the construction of a new adjacent building to accommodate the new program.

The new building was designed with a remarkably modern language without however overlapping with the existing architecture.  The ground level of the extension building houses a classroom, teacher’s room,  sanitary facilities and kitchen. The upper floor has three of the new rooms, all with a direct exit to the exterior.
