An extension project for the kindergarten in Ichihara, Chiba. It is aimed to be a community center not only for children but also for their families and graduates. We provided huge air volume to enables children to run around in the building by ready-made tent warehouse, which reminds of the existed warehouse stood in the same site. The tent warehouse also covers the freely folded wooden walls that forms place-like thing. We also tried to stimulate children’s imagination by leaving the things like front side and backside of the walls, and even the confliction of the brace structure.

In converting this Ryokan (traditional Japanese Inn), in the mountainous holiday retreat area of Yugawara, outside Tokyo, we were inspired by the beautiful surrounding landscape of forest and rivers, and the esteemed traditions of Japanese crafts. We sought to combine richly textured natural materials with traditional Japanese crafts and patterning, to create a fusion and layering of these two elements, and form a beautiful contrast.

Transformation In Pronda Road Civic 8 in Turin, Italy by G.G. RAINERI

Article source: G.G. RAINERI

The measure in question provided for the restructuring and change of use of an industrial building destination located at the center of a quadrilateral of residential buildings. The shed in which we intervened, was placed exactly in the middle of a block of the west area of Turin, near the border with the town of Grugliasco (block between Via De Santis, Pronda road, via Cimone and via Postumia). This is a city area developed after the Second World War, and still partially in the developing; in fact, some of the block buildings have recently been constructued. The intervention  involved the reshaping of the existing building in order to make it habitable. Its location is ideal, since being on the block center of gravity has a right distance from the buildings to have no annoying visual interference; moreover the intervention took place in accordance with the neighbor (the road Pronda 8), which was planning to demolish the existing buildings low to build a new building on front street, leaving the right of way (existing) to enter the lot in object. The existing building has been, so, surrounded by green gardens, partly to other condos in part derived uncovering part of the building itself. The GFA, originally located on the ground floor of the building, was distributed between the new mezzanine and the remaining ground floor. The height of the cover is not changed, the outer walls were maintained in part as boundary walls in part as the walls of the new residence. The most difficult part of the design was to give the proportions of residential building to a building that was built to house production activities. The main elevations are divided by dormers and recesses that mark the number of homes fitted inside. Moreover, the tall, narrow windows (partially obscured by fixed shading) try to give new proportions to the main prospect. The inputs to housing are designed as common compasses. All shutters and entrances are made of silver-colored metal profiles, the shell is finished with “ISOCOPPO” Alubel light gray, and the facades are painted in colored earthenware (red mattonaceo).

July 16th, 2016 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Banker Wire

The design architect of a new building addition and renovation project at the University of Michigan says the firm “pushed the envelope” with the help of Banker Wire.

Banker Wire metal mesh was specified for the railing infill of a new pedestrian bridge, which provides access to the new Center of Excellence in Nano Mechanical Science and Engineering building – an addition to the George Granger Brown (G.G. Brown) Memorial Laboratories building on North Campus in Ann Arbor.

Spanning more than 50 feet, the bridge had a significant impact on the overall design, and as a result needed to mimic the new building’s predominant design feature – a giant LED wall showing abstract samples of active lab work.

Mapo_ New development and a hybrid urban landscape

Mapo is a district undergoing considerable transformation in Seoul through a recent redevelopment craze. Large enterprises, hotels and apartment complexes unable to bear the cost of rent in existing urban centers are entering Mapo’s competitive market. Therefore, the image of Mapo is changing with the development of large apartments complexes behind a single layer of high-rise buildings positioned along the edge of the main streets. In contrast, a part of Mapo district remains undeveloped and intact as it was built from the 1960’s with small scale buildings.

The program’s density, the area of the plot of land and  the  allowed construction  requires to  resolve the project within a compact shape building that occupies the entire surface of the plot of land.

The proposal takes this location into account as a starting point, coming up with a compact volume, which, however, has been perforated by a series of patios where vegetation climbs high achieving a good quality space and well lit building.

Librairie Avant-Garde, Ruralation Library in Zhejiang Province, China by AZL Architects

July 15th, 2016 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: AZL Architects

Located in Daijiashan Village,Eshan She Nationality Township of Tonglu, Zhejiang Province, the Avant-Garde Ruralation Library is the 11th Bookstore run by the Librairie Avant-Garde. With the culture-spreading idea ——Avant-Garde and Library, as well as the unique regional natural and human landscape of the ‘Shes’ village, this project has become the public life bond among local villagers and alien readers, and also become a a focal point of local cultural and creative industries. The main body of the library was an idle yard lying at one side of the village’s main street, including two yellow mud adobe houses and a platform projecting from a slope. While maintaining the structural and spatial sequence of the buildings and courtyards, the architectural design restores the current declined status to a healthy state. The relationship between the new and the old strengthens the ‘timing’. The carriers of time and memory – the adobe walls, tile roofs and roof trusses have become the spatial dominance, and have jointly created context-continuing contemporary local aesthetics, together with the publicity of function regeneration.
