Tianjin Binhai Library in China by MVRDV

July 2nd, 2016 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: MVRDV

MVRDV are nearing the completion of a library in Tianjin, China. The 34,200 m2 building forms part of the new Binhai Cultural Centre, the masterplan of which was designed by German architects GMP, and joins four other buildings through a series of ‘cultural corridors’. The library bases itself around a mirrored spherical auditorium which, coupled with the main atrium, forms an eye that gives panoramas of the interior space and reflects the beautiful park in front of the building. Terraced bookshelves echo the sphere throughout the atrium, leading users up into the heart of the library, before continuing around the building as louvres. The cultural project was designed for Tianjin Binhai District and is estimated to be open to the public in mid-2017.

Westgarten 02 in Frankfurt, Germany by STEFAN FORSTER ARCHITEKTEN

July 2nd, 2016 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: STEFAN FORSTER ARCHITEKTEN

Westgarten 02, a residential block of high-end rental apartments, was built on the last remaining gap in development in Frankfurt´s Westhafen district. In terms of its language of forms, the design was guided by its immediate neighbour, “Westgarten 01”, a mixed residential and retail block. Light-coloured clinker cladding emphasises the ground floor zone, optically dividing private from public space. Continuous cornices and projecting render detail on the parapets emphasise the horizontal articulation of the façade. Contrasting with its adjacent building, Westgarten 02 features light-grey render and a symmetrical façade design with a receding central zone. A sculptural note is added by the two-storey penthouse floor with large roof terraces. The internal arrangement of the apartments – three apartments per floor, accessed via stairwells at either end of the building – is legible in the design of the façade. Each apartment has a loggia overlooking the street and a balcony facing the inner courtyard. In total 39 apartments were created here.

Politeama Cultural Center in Canelones, Uruguay by LORIETO PINTOS SANTELLAN ARQS

July 2nd, 2016 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: LORIETO PINTOS SANTELLAN ARQS

As a result of the need to build a new front of house (cafeteria, administration, restrooms, staff areas, etc.) and to change the circulation layout to provide for universal accessibility, the spatial perception of constricted public areas was doubled. The new building associates with the existing one in a complex manner. First, it acknowledges the primary role of the theater building, and takes from it its design guidelines: material and color, its own height and the height of its formal components, how its façade aligns, and the leading role of solid over hollow. However, this relationship is strained by opposites: the weight of the older building contrasts with a light construction that disregards massiveness while choosing planes that join together following the logic of an origami. While the former’s genetic memory features stone, the latter’s one features paper. The plot of land for the new building had been surrounded by a wall that replicated the material and the esthetics of the theater. What ensued shows a contemporary sensitivity that – as expressed by Solá-Morales – waves from resemblance to analogy.

Perched above the beach at the edge of the tree line, this vacation home allows the dramatic Oregon Coast to take center stage. The design maintains sightlines from the sheltered forest to the open coastline with a minimal structure of glass and steel. Atop the two-story, transparent box, the copper-clad green roof is an elevated slab of native ferns and grasses.

LOFT REHABILITATION AT “EL CABAÑAL” VALENCIA in Spain by AMBAU taller d’arquitectes

July 2nd, 2016 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: AMBAU taller d’arquitectes

This peculiar and personal “loft” is located near Malvarrosa Beach, in the distinctive neighborhood of “El Cabañal” at Valencia City. The Origin house responded to the top floor of a very common type of town house between party walls. It’s accessed from the Street through a narrow staircase. The depth of plot required the existence of intermediate rooms that were illuminated and ventilated by a small courtyard; on the other hand, the kitchen and the “toilet” occupied the rear façade as attached parts, and connected through an ancient terrace that had been closed; Finally, throughout the house roof was a ceiling of plaster that hid the actual volume of the steep cover Gable.
