University of California, Los Angeles, Hitch Student Residences by Steinberg

April 16th, 2016 by Sanjay Gangal

Article source: Steinberg

The recently renovated Hitch Student Residences, located on the northwest edge of campus, is a complex of four three-story residential buildings organized around a series of courtyards and a new commons building with shared amenities and meeting spaces. The renovation project was conceived to address accessibility and life-safety deficiencies, including seismic strengthening of the existing structures and inclusion of fire protection systems. The project also provided the opportunity to update the exterior image and energy performance of the buildings by providing a new “skin” as well as updating the interior spaces with new finishes. The existing outdated commons building was replaced with a new building that provides support functions for the Hitch community including study areas, offices, laundry facilities, vending, and a multipurpose space that includes a display kitchen.

Renovation and extension of a 30’s row house in Utrecht, The Netherlands by Lab-S

April 16th, 2016 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Lab-S

Dutch design studio Lab-S has renovated a 30’s row house in the city of Utrecht (the Netherlands) and added a contemporary two story extension in harmony with the old house. The house has been made suitable for a young family with three kids as each floor has been given a new layout. Also, the old extension at the back of the house has been replaced by a new one of the same size. The design of this new façade is inspired by the old rear façade, with its large amount of window frames. Lab-S chose to keep the steel structure of the new extension in sight and add new steel window frames in the same colour. The result is a robust and at the same time slender looking extension that lets natural light enter deep into the old building.
