Article source: Madeleine Blanchfield Architects

This alts and adds project involved converting an existing 1920’s duplex apartment into a house. The internal planning was modified including all new bathrooms, kitchen and fit out. The existing street side facade was modified in keeping with the character of the existing building, the rear was completely opened to the garden and a new pavilion structure built to house dining and living areas. The contemporary and light filled new spaces make reference to the older existing ones in their materiality and proportions, but are distinctly contrasting. The result is a light filled new living area and character filled bedrooms and other rooms which highlight the qualities of the old and the new.

Villa Out of the box is situated on the edge of Zoetermeer, next to the Bentwoud Park. The design is a contemporary interpretation of the rural surroundings. Inspired by the local building typology, the villa closes itself off from the busy street, only to open itself up to the garden via several carefully designed terraces.

Dikehaugen 12 in Trondheim, Norway by Arkitekt August Schmidt AS

February 21st, 2017 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Arkitekt August Schmidt AS

Dikehaugen 12 is a small one-family home situated amid trees in the outskirts of the city of Trondheim, Norway. The complex comprises three saddle-roof built volumes: dwelling, suana and annex, all constructed in wood and clad with pine shingles.

The Dikehaugen project is a commentary on contemporary building practices, the aim is to demontrate (rather than speak of) solutions and thinking which represents an alternative to todays standards. The project aimed at keeping a high standard in planning, materials, construction, and design, with the architect involved in and in charge of all aspects of the building process.

Hansen, Mixed Use Building in Athens, Greece by AREA, Architecture Research Athens

February 21st, 2017 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: AREA, Architecture Research Athens

This project redefines the mixed-use housing typology of the “polykatoikia”, ubiquitous in Greek cities, in one of the most dense urban neighborhoods of Athens’ center, Patissia. An L-shaped plan is dictated by site orientation and adjacent building mass, creating a small garden to the South. The vertical arrangement of different programs, typically integrated behind a uniform facade of duplicate floors, is articulated here as a “sectional” facade: individual floor levels appear to extend different lengths along the street, varying the relationship of closed to open space at each floor. Along the street, the mass of the building is lifted to provide broad visual access to the private garden, and allow room for two vehicles. At each level of the building, an exterior or transparent space \”bridges\” the street to the backyard along the East party line, whereas the most sheltered interior spaces are concentrated along the opposite party line. This results in a double strategy. On the one hand, the careful manipulation of the building code incorporates a pilotis, a pergola and covered outdoor spaces, creating a porous civic facade that subverts the requirement for the building’s mass to continue that of its neighbors. On the other hand, the near-absence of protruding balconies brings the building’s interior closer to the realm of the street.

LISBON STONE BLOCK in Lisboa, Portugal by Souza Oliveira – Arquitectura e Urbanismo Lda.

February 21st, 2017 by Sumit Singhal

Article source: Souza Oliveira – Arquitectura e Urbanismo Lda.

Lisbon and its “new avenues” (built in the beginning of the past century) are always a challenge for an architect.

Lisbon’s Stone Block is located in the corner of two major streets  and that position is somehow special in the relation that the building it-self creates with the “urban net”.

The idea/concept of the building is based in a “mutant facade”: a skin in stone, almost metamorphoses and movable.
