Terraced-House Renovation in Schaerbeek, Belgium by Edouard Brunet + François Martens

Friday, November 20th, 2015

Article source: Edouard Brunet + François Martens

Taking into account the city’s urban tissue, the project is the renovation of a Brussels typical terraced-house. Originally inhabited by a single family, the house appeared too big and difficult to take care of after the children grew up and left. The owner of the house then decided to sell the last two floors to a friend, in order for him to convert them into his own appartement.

Vives university college – campus Bruges in Belgium by SAR architecten

Sunday, November 8th, 2015

Article source: SAR architecten

In the Middle Ages, Bruges had two big ambitions: to have a sea port and a university, fine ambitions that the magnificent old city could barely realize despite its many efforts. During history Antwerp and Ghent took over the leading roles in those matters and Bruges became during three centuries ‘Bruges la morte’. However at the end of the 20th century Bruges is the 3rd seaport of the BENELUX, and in 2009 the VIVES University College was built, associated to the well known ‘University of Louvain’.

Company office building for Immoquatro in Gent, Belgium by BURO II & ARCHI+I

Tuesday, October 27th, 2015

Article source: BURO II & ARCHI+I

How architecture improves the quality of the daily work

Around 25 staff is working for Accountancy Service in the new office building.
The plot has a level difference across twelve meters: the garden lies approximately 90cm lower than the front garden strip at street level. This natural slope was incorporated into the design for the new office building. It was decided not to use the garden for parking; parking is accommodated below the building. By raising the volume of the new structure marginally from street level, space was created without the need for a deep excavation. This allows all-round daylight to penetrate the car and bicycle parking level and gives the impression that the building is floating.
