The Lexicon in Shanghai, China by MA2

Thursday, August 11th, 2016

Article source: MA2

The conceptual design for shanghai is a theoretical exercise in thematic processes, an investigation into architectural language as a lexical device governed by thematic parameters and syntactical structures. The lexicon is rather a series of architectural devices and tectonics composed as an interface for a subject and object experiencer. These tectonics thread through an arrangement of digital art and light sculptures as a syntax of meaning and definition to the overarching architecture. The correlation between lexical properties and syntactic structures are modes of operation in which the architecture emerges. Meaning and experience are not limited by surface and material association; but when art and technology are introduced, the system of thematic structure becomes visible in its lexical and syntax relationship. The art work in the form of digital projection, light sculpture, and diverse mediums perform as aspectual properties, unlike the thematic tectonic shapes and form. They become interface entities; these entities are mediators between spaces and the architectural body. The subject experiencer correlates the differences in the art and tectonic expression, but the event in which these entities project are undefined allowing emergence in activity to develop and operate.

Humble Hostel in Beijing, China by CAO PU STUDIO

Sunday, August 7th, 2016

Article source: CAO PU STUDIO

Nowadays in Beijing’s hutong, most of the courtyards properties are divided up into mix occupants instead of one big family. Everyone is trying to occupy more space, thus the shared communal space in the middle has shrink down to one walking aisle. The yard was already taken up by small constructions built by the neighbors, bicycle parking and piles of junk, leaving a tiny space barely to walk through. This is a very common situation of the living environment in Beijing’s Hutong yard.

Apartment 37 in Shanghai, China by Atelier Mearc

Early architecture was built maybe merely to accommodate people. As time changes, city breath permeates into architecture and stamps them with urbanization. Just like the old residential buildings in shanghai.

Fashionable Villa with Rich Feng Shui in China by Another Design Interntional

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2016

Article source: Another Design Interntional

Julian and his wife, Mana, a fashion designer, chose the 3,500 sq ft, five-storey house they have now been living in for 18 months for its stunning views over the country park, Plover Cove Reservoir and the South China Sea.

“It is a famous feng shui area because you can see three ‘dishes’ of water – the reservoir and the sea on either side of an island – which is a sign of very good fortune. There are green mountain views and we can also see the Kwun Yum [statue] from our rooftop on a clear day,” says Chan. “I love it because we are so close to nature – you can hear the birds sing during the day and the insects whistling at night. One of our priorities was the private glass-fronted terrace [with water wall] so we could take advantage of our natural environment.”

CupOne cafe in Beijing, China by Latitude

Friday, July 29th, 2016

Article source: Latitude

Cafés, restaurants, libraries and the likes have become indubitable extensions of our own homes. In this particular occasion, LATITUDE was commissioned to explore the possibilities of extending the public realm into a standard café organized into two floors and a terrace.

By removing the entrance façade, the first floor was opened up, thus becoming an extension of the outside space. Inside, visitors can find two areas: the fast (come-and-go) area and the relaxed (sitting down) area. The first one features high tables and chairs next to the service desk –a longitudinal lighting box wrapped in white glass–. The second area portrays low tables, chairs and a bench zone. These two areas are divided by steel made longitudinal furniture that incorporates an orchestrated disposition of mirrors and projectors to create a visual illusion.
