A mixed use building in Nancy, France by Anne DEMIANS

Thursday, March 19th, 2015

Article source: Anne DEMIANS

Nancy, A Modern City for Over Three Centuries

Throughout the various periods of its urban development, Nancy’s vision always preceded its architectural commissions. The city suburbs were initially attributed to the original castle town, and in the eighteenth century, a message of unity was asserted at the annexation of Lorraine to the Kingdom of France. And this was an opportunity to highlight the ducal power around an exceptional architecture (classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site). At the beginning of the twentieth century, the architecture in Nancy successfully integrated the richness of the École de Nancy in its constructions, just as it was able to promote new ideas on building and construction in the footsteps of the architect and designer Jean Prouvé, who was also mayor of Nancy after the Liberation. This identity and legacy continues today with the reconquest of the riverbanks of the Meurthe: the city of the twenty-first century.

30 public housing units in Paris, France by LAN Architecture

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

Article source: LAN Architecture

Bordered by rue des Orteaux, rue de Fontarabie, and the Passage Fréquel, the Fréquel-Fontarabie block is the last stage of the development of the mixed development zone of the la Réunion neighborhood. This effort has sought to reduce the visible level of in-habitability, build new housing, value existing resources, and design nearby public facilities in an effort to create quality public spaces. The project to build thirty housing units has pursued a dual goal: to reconstruct the older urban fabric through small interventions within an overall framework of sustainable development.

City of Paris approves MVRDV’s restructuring of 1970s superblock in Montparnasse

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

Article source: MVRDV

The City of Paris has given the green light to MVRDV’s ambitious plan for the restructuring of the mixed-use urban block Vandamme Nord at Gaîté-Montparnasse in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. The large building complex, built in the 1970s, comprises a shopping centre, offices, a public library, a hotel and an underground car park, all of which will be retrofitted so as to reintroduce the human scale to an urban environment largely characterized by wide boulevards and monolithic structures. In addition to the face-lift provided by a new facade, the accessibility and programmatic identity of each of these programs will be improved through a total internal reorganisation of the complex. The building’s restructuring also foresees extending the existing commercial spaces, creating new office space, a new kindergarten, an expanded library, a conference centre, as well as a number of social housing units.

AVARICUM commercial and residential complex in Bourges, France by Arte Charpentier Architectes

Saturday, March 7th, 2015

Article source: v2com

The Avaricum project is located in a strategic space, on the threshold between the medieval and modern city. The new gateway to the heart of the city of Bourges, in central France, Avaricum reveals itself to the city as a development hub and a unique opportunity to strengthen the commercial appeal of the city centre. In the heart of the space, Arte Charpentier Architects and the Blatter architectural firm designed a major commercial and residential project. The complex extends the city’s existing pedestrian zone toward the north while alleviating the landscape discontinuities caused by post-war urban development.
