Restoration and redesign of the Grand-Palais des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France by by LAN Architecture

THE NEW GRAND PALAIS: AN EXAMPLE OF MODERNITY

To our contemporary eyes, the Grand Palais is both an idea and a symbol of modernity. It is a hybrid building in terms of its architecture, its usage and its history. Neither a museum nor a simple monument, its architecture has an identity all its own, centered around the notion of a “culture machine,” a spatial means for hosting a vast diversity of events and audiences that exponentially exalts the site’s “universal” and “republican” vocation. The restoration and restructuring of the entire monument affords us the chance to reinforce this aspiration.

Site development at the Familistère in Guise, France by h2o architectes

Thursday, March 6th, 2014

Article source: h2o architectes

The Familistère is a vast housing complex founded by Jean-Baptiste André Godin in 1859 in relation with the stove manufacturing business. Until 1968, this Social Palace was the theatre of a unique social experimentation in the industrial world: the Familistère was a sort of utopia for an industrial society composed like an urban transition between the town and the park of the city island nearby.

Mediatheque in Mont de Marsan, France by ARCHI5

Friday, February 28th, 2014

Article source: ARCHI5

The Media Library is a strong cultural symbol for the Marsan urban area. It is a place of discovery, gatherings and exchanges for its users. It is a visible, distinctive building without being overpowering.

The Media Library stands in the middle of the Bosquet barracks, and care has been taken to augment the dialogue with the place’s strong architectural whole. With its clean envelope of pure geometric lines, a 197 ft x 197 ft square, the building complies with the classical layout yet contrasts with its austerity by offsetting the system with a corner opening onto the city. Its façades reflect the surrounding barracks like a respectful, deferential mirror.

Music Conservatory in Paris’ 17th Arrondissement, France by basalt Architecture

Sunday, February 23rd, 2014

Article source: basalt Architecture

Located on a plot of land between two high-rise buildings, the conservatory stands at the interface of architectural scripts linked to the city’s building heritage. On the edge of the 17th arrondissement to the south Haussmann-style buildings look across at social housing of a more recent period. So the conservatory is located at a strategic point due to its theme, i.e. the 17th arrondissement’s history is closely linked with French music, and building this new edifice has to be worthy of this past.

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

Article source: Coldefy & Associés Architectes Ubranistes

Symbol of rebirth of a neighbourhood, the Arboretum project is a continuation of the development along Hoover Boulevard and the very metropolitan Euralille 2, articulating of the future Porte de Valenciennes neighbourhood. This strategic position induces a sense of transition from the economic heart Euralille to the mixed-use neighbourhoods of housing, commercial, and amenity programs, in which the quality of life takes precedent over monumentality.

COLLÈGE LUCIE AUBRAC in Tourcoing, France by Coldefy & Associés Architectes Ubranistes

Thursday, February 20th, 2014

Article source: Coldefy & Associés Architectes Ubranistes

Collège Lucie Aubrac is the first secondary school in the region to achieve the BBC label (Low Consumption Building). The project is located in the western part of the city of Tourcoing, in a primarily residential neighborhood along with some educational and social amenities. Due to its remarkable location at the edge of the city, along with its tranquil monumentality, the new school adds a new magnitude to the entry to the city. By opening up to two major axes, Industrial Boulevard and the street Fin de la guerre, the new building draws from the best of the natural conditions of the site.

Article source: Coldefy & Associés Architectes Ubranistes

The project is located on one of the many industrial redevelopment sites in this part of northern France, on the Fives Cail Babcock site in an area in full urban renewal, studied and developed by l’AUC urban planners.

The site is bordered to the west by an alley containing rows of low-rise “workers’ housing” (two stories + attic). This alley runs between rue des Rogations, located to the south of the property, and rue Pierre Legrand to the north that contains single-family houses (three stories + attic) with large gardens in the center of the block.

Construction of a new individual house in Montferrier sur Lez, France by NBJ Architectes

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

Article source: NBJ Architectes

Situated in a pine forest on a plot with a steep, the first job was the creation of an enabling environment for the establishment of a home. The slope is both the first constraint and the major asset of the place to embrace an open landscape on the horizon. Two axes marked two choices in the site making : Firstly, the accompaniment of the slope, in order to work on the establishment of regular level. Like terraces in the landscape, a journey consisted by Corten steel sheets is created to accompany the arrival at home while building the landscape discovery.
