Blur in Bagnolet, France by CoudamyDesign

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

Article source: CoudamyDesign

Paul Coudamy has transformed a butcher shop in Bagnolet (France) into a private home. Renovating professional premises to change them into living accommodation is now a frequent occurrence in Paris and its surrounding suburbs, an exercise in architecture that requires thinking of new concepts of living, interchanging private life and public life. Blur is therefore a transparent environment made up of spaces that never totally discloses its fragile privacy. It is formed of a continuous succession of concrete and glass symbolizing a period that combines work and pleasure in a single movement.

Villa B in Lyon, France by Tectoniques Architects

Thursday, December 5th, 2013

Article source: Tectoniques Architects

For architects, designing a house is an adventure, but reality is often not as easy as foreseen. The site is complicated, the neighbours are unhappy, the unforeseen factors are really not foreseen, construction work is not as fast as planned, the ecological goals are difficult to reach, and the contractors are not as qualified as specified, and so on – the list is long. In this situation, the architect will be the arbitrator and the ground-breaker. In the end, the construction seems simple and natural.

Indoor sports centre and Conference centre in Tignespace, France by Sylvain GIACHINO Architecte

Thursday, November 21st, 2013

Article source: Sylvain GIACHINO Architecte

The new indoor sports and conference centre in Tignes is an extraordinary project that meets the ambitious challenge of providing an exceptional facility very discreetly, without fuss. Located in a restricted site, its single stone and glass façade mirrors the majestic mountain and lake landscape around Tignes. The building’s 8,300 m2 are buried under a planted roof, visible from all angles, which will become a flowery meadow in summer and a young children’s ski area in winter.

JACQUES DE VAUCANSON HIGH SCHOOL in TOURS, France by Colboc Franzen & Associés

Wednesday, November 13th, 2013

Article source: Colboc Franzen & Associés

The art of dentistry on an occupied site

In the suburbs of Tours, in the late 80s, a large concrete vessel dedicated to teaching was constructed, the Jacques de Vaucanson High School. It affirms an orthogonal composition of geometric shape, relayed by a work of genius on the cuts, displaying an absolute belief in the architecture. But this act of bravery has been overtaken by time. The areas of activity have eroded the surrounding land, low maintenance budgets have prematurely aged it, thermal standards have changed, and the number of students will increase: it must be restructured.
