Studio Santral in Eyüp, İstanbul by Erginoğlu & Çalışlar Architects

Thursday, September 14th, 2017

Article source: Erginoğlu & Çalışlar Architects

Shaped as a long and narrow rectangle, the project area is situated in the south of Bilgi University’s Silahtarağa Campus, which has been transformed into an educational institution from the Silahtarağa Power Plant, the first power plant of Turkey. The southern part of the area contains lodging buildings dated to the 1st National Architecture Period and once allocated to the accommodation, recreation, and social activities of power plant employees. The 180 m by 20 m plot dimensions designated in the master plan required the building mass to be shaped as a long and narrow rectangle as well. Taking into consideration the surrounding fabric and historic buildings, the block effect of the building was lessened with terrace gardens repeating on the vertical level. The nearly 50-meter length of lodging and school buildings were determinative in the division of the 150 meter-length building by three terrace gardens, so they could be perceived as four blocks, the longest of which is 42 meters.

An area located next to the entrance gate of the school has been allocated for this function, which is restricted with the retaining wall formed by the elevation difference of the neighboring parcel on the west side and the school land on the north side. A double layered facade has been planned in order to meet the illumination need for education and whereas to reduce the heat effect in the summer months. The area remaining between these layers have been planned as a garden where students can grow plants. The entrance of the building, which is planned as two-stored, is projected at the 1/3 axis of its long side. The entrance area has been considered as cloakroom and reception. A semi-closed play ground has been created at the roadside of the building. The second floor of the structure includes two classrooms and wet areas. The classrooms have been projected on the upper floor in order to avoid the noise from the road as well as the school garden. The Smile Shop Dental Polyclinic in Istanbul, Turkey by Slash Architects

Thursday, June 8th, 2017

Article source: Slash Architects

The asymmetrical panels starting from the outer facade and flowing into interior spaces creates a sense of canyon experience. Dental Polyclinic that is located in Maslak Uniq Istanbul Shopping Mall, creates a striking appearance with its unusual concept. Space is cracked open by the circulation and the waiting areas which creates the perception of depth in the project. he service and clinic usages are located around the 3 solid walls of the space leaving the mediocre center open for easy access. This also helps to be able to read the usages of the spaces behind by the frames that are sticking out of the walls of the canyon wall. The spaces behind the panels around circulation are totally white, clean and simple which creates a strong contrast between the interior and exterior of the clinic box spaces.
