This transformation from utilitarian industrial building to attractive office environment required a change from hard and functional to soft and friendly. A representative environment that is welcoming for guests, while simultaneously providing a safe and clear overview of all the heavy clay works in the factory. The phenomenon of the ‘Tent Room’, as found in old country houses, was an important reference point for this transformation.
Witte de Withstraat, one of Rotterdam’s liveliest and well-known streets, has a new resident. CityHub have modified three existing buildings on the street to create the second of their new, fresh and interactive hotels for the digital native. Those who are familiar with the CityHub concept will already know that it is no standard hotel. Typical rooms are replaced with futuristic sleeping unit or hubs. The hubs are aimed at a generation with a digital lifestyle, who make the most out of the interactive features and enjoy being connected 24/7.
UNStudio designs the IJbaan Cable Car: Amsterdam’s fast, green and future-proof public transport connection
UNStudio has completed designs for the IJbaan: Amsterdam’s future cable car, commissioned by the IJbaan Foundation (Stichting IJbaan). The IJbaan is a grassroots “Amsterdammer” citizens’ initiative, snowballing from a crowdfunding campaign led by Bas Dekker and Willem Wessels started in 2015 and now supported by the Municipality of Amsterdam. Its goal is to create a new connection across the IJ by the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam in 2025.
The one and a half kilometer cable car line is a clean and quick public transport connection between two growing residential areas: Amsterdam-West and Amsterdam-Noord / NDSM. The design consists of three slender pylons and two stations: NDSM Marina on the North Bank and Minervahaven to the South. The cable car is designed flexibly, so that in the future the route can be expanded to include a third station, creating a connection to the Hemknoop, Sloterdijk Station or even Westergasfabriek and the Westerpark, depending on growth and need.
In one of the oldest streets in Rotterdam we designed the renovation of a monumental townhouse. We transformed the former museum of Kralingen into a luxury home. While maintaining the existing framework of the villa, we completely restructured the floor plans. We wanted to adapt the villa in a way to meet the needs of users while retaining the original features.
From 21 to 29 October 2017 the Dutch Design Week (DDW)—one of the most important design events in Northern Europe—took place in Eindhoven (NL). In 2017 DDW and Design City Eindhoven launched the first edition of the World Design Event (WDE), which provides a platform for future makers from all over the world. There’s a new funky kid in Maastricht: hotel The Dutch. Although the name suggests otherwise, you’ll find here everything except Delftware, wooden shoes and tulips. At The Dutch, situated in a beautiful mansion, you imagine yourself back in the ‘80s of today. Expect the colors of Miami Vice, the coziness of Full House and the out-of-this-world elements of Alf. Discover a classy mix of rotating disco balls, pink flamingos, pop ups of ‘The Hoff’ and fitness lady Jane Fonda who ‘wants you to take the stairs’. Definitely a place that Madonna then and now would enjoy to the fullest. ‘Let’s hear it for the boys’ of Twin Peaks Hospitality! Besides Hotel Beaumont and restaurant Harry’s owners Jean-Marc and Christophe Beaumont created another outspoken hotel concept with a one of a kind holiday experience in the beautiful city of Maastricht.
Studioninedots completes residential complex on Zeeburger Island Amsterdam
On the northern tip of the rapidly developing Zeeburger Island in Amsterdam Studioninedots, commissioned by de Alliantie and Lingotto, designed two striking volumes. Due to their stepped profiles and changing facade rhythms they appear different depending on the viewing angle. All 142 residences plus the shared outdoor spaces on the deck are orientated towards the magnificent views.
Vondelgym focuses on hybridism. They offer classes that combine high-intensity training with Pilates and yoga and believe that large open spaces allow participants to ‘feel the energy of the other classes. Fitness is part of a lifestyle. It’s about being critical of yourself and your environment. Clients put extra care and effort into their health and appearance and equally expect a cared-for interior design in the spaces they frequent.
Located at the heart of the historic Zuiderpark, the €50m sports campus is an innovative collaboration of alliances between education, sport, sport science and the community, for both the municipality of The Hague and its private partners: the Haagse Hogeschool and ROC Mondriaan.
Redesign of a former office building designed by Abe Bonnema realized in 1980 in the center of Leeuwarden. The office building is part of a larger complex with houses, shops and a passage that has since fallen into disuse.
