The Matrix Apartments in Parramatta, Australia by Tony Owen Partners

The site is located on a prominent corner in historic Parramatta in Sydney’s West. The surrounding buildings ranges from 2 to 18 storey apartment buildings, so this was very much an infill project. The 9 storey development contains ground floor retail and 32 units above totally some 4500m2. The massing fills in the corner and completes the streetscape. The streetscape on the ground floor is activated with retail uses. As the site is extremely tight it is impossible to achieve ramp access to the basement levels. A car loft is used for parking access. The design of the apartments has been influenced by the principles of passive solar design. The majority of units are either corner units, through units or have ventilation slots on the façade to maximise natural ventilation and minimise energy use. The façade lattice screen was originally intended as a structure for a green wall on the entire façade.

Square Civic And Community Building in Parramatta, Australia by Manuelle Gautrand Architecture

The ambition of the City of Parramatta was: “We want this development to be unique and spectacular – a building that will be recognized around the world and help to put Parramatta on the map”.

A cutting-edge glass construction featuring a wave-shaped façade of crystalline blocks has been selected as the winning design for Parramatta Square’s landmark civic and community building.

Focus Apartments in Parramatta, Sydney by Tony Owen Partners

Tony Owen Partners have just completed the Focus Apartments in Parramatta, Sydney. The 15 storey tower by Merhis is Sydney’s largest fully steel framed apartment building and contains 120 units in 2 towers. The steel structure also uses lightweight Hebel floors and walls and is the first of a number of projects being developed by this group. This prototype building explores different techniques to achieve a high quality design at a lower price point. The use of steel resulted in a lower cost and faster construction.

Ideas on Edge in Parramatta, Australia by Tyrrell Studio with Daniel Griffin

Sydney based Tyrrell Studio has collaborated with Daniel Griffin to create a first prize winning entry to the 2011 international design competition Ideas on Edge Parramatta. The competition received over 150 entries, 40% international and the remainder from around Australia. There were 3 equal winners.

Drawing showing the natural processes of the river, it’s species diversity and how this is translated into an architecture which is ‘of’ the river. View over raingarden edge and into ‘The Birdshell’
