Taking inspiration from the multifaceted lifestyles of Shanghai millennials, Kokaistudio’s interiors for Assemble by Réel concept store quite literally brings the outside in. Taking shoppers on a style journey, landmarked by striking installations, the resulting layout guides visitors through distinct districts and trends in a way that is nothing if not memorable.
Located on the third floor of a high-end shopping mall in Shanghai, Assemble by Réel is a men’s fashion and lifestyle concept store. In creating the venue’s layout and approach, Kokaistudios looked to the city itself and the style-inspired passions of its young, trendy demographic. With this in mind, interiors feature eye-catching installations based on recognizable architectural city motifs, each signalling a distinct fashion approach: classic, designer, urban, and contemporary. Collectively, these four zones speak to the lifestyle of a generation of China's coolest consumers, guiding visitors on a clear journey, and creating a memorable shopping experience.
Located on the ground floor of an old garden house, it’s a U-shape room with a full-faceted semi-circular window facing the back garden. Like many other 1930’s houses in French Concession in Shanghai, the house was originally built and inhabited by one bourgeois family, then was distribute to several families. Each family occupied one room and share the common kitchens and bathrooms on the other side of corridor. After many years of living together, people find the poor hygiene condition and lack of privacy getting more and more unbearable and moved out the house one after another in recent years. The 42sqm room was once the ballroom of the house and then a couple lived in it for decades, eventually moved out when they getting old.
citizenM has landed in one of the most up-and-coming business areas of Shanghai: Hongqiao, in the Minhang District. Concrete designed the interior of the freshly built 303-room citizenM hotel. It's the brand’s second location in Asia (after Taipei North Gate). It is also a second collaboration between citizenM, Shun Tak, China Resources with the creative direction by Concrete.
citizenM is part of a larger area development at the Ziteng road metro station where offices, hotel and the MixC shopping mall are being build. The project is located in the west part of Shanghai between the Middle and Outer ring road near the Gubei district also known as Koreatown.
Located in an ancient neighbor in Hongkou district, Shanghai, the project is part of a popular TV show called Dream Home. The renovation designed by On Design Studio aim to provide a new identity to the interior of a 100 years old apartment by creating a balance between the historical aspects of the existing location and a more stylish, contemporary space to reflect the changing needs of the owners with an eye toward the future.
These new requirements break with the previous layout, where segregated spaces, undefined uses, low quality light and a lack of comfort were the norm.
Creation reflects our inner selves. Some consider it as a mirror; it can get very personal to create and to design. Thus, if we want to create groundbreaking designs, it is us that need to have a breakthrough. If we want to reveal the intrinsic quality of beauty, we need the constructs of beauty. In this process, self-reflection and self-doubt are involved, and deconstruction is inevitable.
This UA cinema in Shanghai celebrates deconstructivism, a postmodern architectural movement that has started since the 1980s. Deconstructivism is about moving away from the shackle of traditions, questioning pre-existing rules, challenging pre-dominating frameworks. It is a movement about freedom and oppression. The deconstructivist philosophy originated from the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, who had influenced some architects during the start of the movement. His approach can be seen in some architectural designs, where there is an absence of harmony, continuity and symmetry in the lines and forms. This design is an attempt to participate in the movement, by creating non-rectilinear shapes that visually appear with unpredictability and controlled chaos. By disassembling space, perhaps a new meaning can be given to the usage of space.

Housing a nursery, primary school, an adult education facility, and an investment company, B Campus aspires to be a learning center for all ages and stations of life. The investment firm driving the project sees personal progress as the key to a global progress.
Jungle Race is a 1,200 m2 indoor intervention designed to reactivate sparsely used areas in a shopping mall, occupying the entire 2nd floor and with special emphasis on one of the corridors without any commercial shopfronts.
Due to the lack of shopfronts, that corridor seemed like a back of house residual space with poor pedestrian circulation. The client envisioned to turn it into a family-oriented entertaining space.
For life-style brand “Genshang”, We designed their new tea house on Madang road, downtown of Shanghai. The client wishes to have a place for the slow life in contrast with the daily fast-paced life. We approached the project by making a gentle sequence, from the entrance shop, long tea bar, dining area to the lounge room at the end.
The project is located on the 1st floor of a commercial complex. The main entrance is set up on the inner side of the shopping complex, framed by copper, another interpretation of their brand colour. The door is recessed and open to the side, in order to welcome the guest gently into the shop. The lower display, together with translucent fabric softly hides space behind, and shift the passage to the side.
HEMU Headquarters is situated at Jiading District, Shanghai. The original building was built in the 1960s or 1970s, with a yard. As an annexe of Huilongtan Park which boasts a history of over 400 years, the building features a two-storey structure of bricks and timber, gray bricks and tiles with green moss on the surface as well as lots of archways. The yard is surrounded by century-old trees, echoing with jingling bells of Yingkui Mountain nearby. It’s a fantastic place where people can enjoy birds’ twitter, fragrance of flowers and a fantastic view of lush trees.

We understand this store as a world about “time.” Coffee beans are alive, making, grinding, extracting, and every step of a cup of coffee requires patience and concentration. It is also a quiet world. Time is quietly flowing here. The components of this world are mainly wood, the life that condenses into time. A metal curved display frame is drawn across the right wall. The space is always developed in a binary way, moving and static, just and soft, inside and outside, positive and negative. This gives the entire space a certain tension.
