Nursery School in Berriozar, Spain by Javier Larraz Arquitectos

Wednesday, February 20th, 2013

Article source: Javier Larraz, Iñigo Beguiristain and Iñaki Bergera

According to Louis I. Kahn the first school began under a tree, when a man who knew he was a teacher began to discuss what he had learned with others who did not know they were students. Like those students, children under 3 years old learn intuitively and unconsciously. Drawing a parallel with the story of Kahn, one might wonder about the role that tree, that is, architecture, plays in the practice of teaching.

Can Bisa is a late-19th century mansion now owned by Vilassar de Mar Council. Situated on the Riera de Cabrils watercourse, it occupies part of a street block that used to include a factory, now demolished. Its historic and heritage value and the strategic position it occupies in the town as a whole led the Council to consider it the ideal venue for a cultural facility, completing the complex with a social housing block.

Can Font Cultural Center in Barcelona, Spain by Taller 9s Arquitectes

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Article source: Taller 9s Arquitectes

Can Font is a “Masia”, an architectural traditional catalan typology that represents the important rural heritage of the village of Les Franqueses, sited near Barcelona. Some years ago it was an isolated building, surrounded by fields of cultures, but nowadays it is placed in the middle of an urbanized area, remaining ‘corseted’ between new buildings. The new planning for the area that abolished the open space existing in front of the main facade, converted the lateral façade facing the new square, without architectonical interest, as main facade.

Article source: Vaumm Arkitektura

The proposal of Molinao Park pretends to be the continuity of the park situated along the riverside and the eastern end of the town to the highway and Don Bosco slope. The front on (sports space) is situated at the southern end of the park, next to the pedestrian access from the Oarso street bridge, so that releases the largest area of the open space to the north, near the train viaduct and the possible accesses through it to create a space which allows the use of it with temporary uses.

The difficulty of defining a physical stable environment before the devastating dynamics of the managerial expansion of ARENA MEDIA company led us to turning the architecture into a phenomenon, providing it with the aptitude to appear, to transform and to be eliminated. The Agencia de Medios Arena Media Communications in Madrid decided to carry out the reform of its offices with an objective double: to maximize the space to shelter a major number of employees and to establish a new commercial image towards the clients and mass media.

Library in Singuerlin, Spain by Taller 9s Arquitectes

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Article source: Taller 9s Arquitectes

Comprehensive intervention on the top floor of a disused market, to convert it into a new cultural center for the neighbourhood (library, bar and cinema). Transformation of a massive VOLUME, closed and geometrically confused, in an open space, diaphanous and representative. From the obligatory response to site constraints (existing structure, easements for the facilities, low ceiling …) is designed a light building, without closures, without interior walls, simply a part of PUBLIC SPACE conveniently bounded, climatized and equipped.
