Polwaththa House in Pannipitiya, Sri Lanka by Chinthaka Wickramage Architect

Friday, April 29th, 2016

Article source: Chinthaka Wickramage Architect

A small coconut grove measuring approximately half an acre (80 Perches) overlooking a paddy field, inherited by the owner, was selected to build a house in Sub Urban Colombo. There were existing houses on the Western edge of the property with medium built up density but the Eastern side was full of mature trees including coconut trees, while Northern side overlooked a beautiful paddy field. In addition there were substantial numbers of existing mature trees present at the site boundaries, giving it almost a ‘semi wilderness’. Challenges for the architects were to build a four bedroomed house overlooking this wonderful future garden saving many existing trees as possible.

ENIGMA in Colombo, Sri Lanka by Narein Perera

Friday, June 12th, 2015

Article source: Narein Perera

The form of the house is primarily generated in creating the concept of an “Enigma” in the mind of the person entering. Guided by intermediate open spaces, the entrance court, the pool, subsequently arriving at the main volume of the living room where the climax of the ‘hidden’ garden is fully experienced. The entrance court envisioned as a part of the street on which the 20perch site forms the end block, defined by the continued building lines of the adjoining plots, the random rubble vertical envelope and pergola horizontal plane,  serve to contain, pause, experience the powerful shadows the sun paints, overwhelm, announcing arrival.

Nisala Villa in Kandy, Sri Lanka by Nath Rankothge & Associates

Sunday, April 5th, 2015

Article source: Nath Rankothge & Associates

Nisala Villa is a fusion of vernacular and contemporary, Sri Lankan and Western sensibilities. Located along the village high road in the countryside of Kandy, a UNESCO world heritage city, the villa aims to respond to the rich architectural and cultural heritage, tropical mountain landscape and climate.

The design is an exercise in abstraction and simplicity, inspired by Sri Lankan ‘up-country’ living and ancient kingdoms, utilizing locally sourced vernacular materials and building traditions.

Fernando House in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka by D plus architects

This house is located in a sub-urban area 1.5Km from Moratuwa City. Foot print is about 4200 sq.ft.

‘Court Yard House’ Residence for Fernando Family at Moratuwa

IT is a strong belief of the architect; that architecture is there to capture the ‘moods’…. ‘Moods’ that are pronounced by the lifestyle of the users of space; ‘moods’ that are dictated by the surroundings on which the building is to be erected… ‘Moods’ that last the lifespan of the building. Thus the design defies the boundaries of ‘modern’ and ‘traditional’; and instead concentrates on a language to reflect the ‘real’ ‘moods’ noticed by the architect, on their merits.

Set on a sloping land overlooking the Historic Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, across the Kandy Lake, the owner, Jayampathi Aluvihare and his family enjoy the luxury of a unique house on a prestigious location in Kandy. The panoramic view has become the main influence on the design while the topography of the land and the height restrictions, imposed by the local authority has provided enough constraints for the design process.
