Back of the Yards High School in Chicago, Illinois by STL Architects

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

Article source: STL Architects

This urban high school is organized into three thematic components: body, mind and spirit, that relate to the various programs and activities within the school that compose the curriculum. The site is zoned according to these thematic areas and bars are created, housing the athletics (body), the academy classrooms and teaching spaces (mind), and the library, arts and music (spirit). The bars slide against each other to create outdoor spaces on the site, programmed for specific activities that work in conjunction with the buildings—entry courtyard, athletics fields, and reading garden. The three volumes (body, mind, and spirit) that comprise the school are created by one continuous wall that snakes back and forth through the site.

Columbus Museum of Art Expansion and Renovation in Ohio by DesignGroup

Thursday, November 26th, 2015

Article source: DesignGroup

Under the design leadership of DesignGroup principal Michael Bongiorno, AIA, the museum design team has developed a bold and novel design strategy. DesignGroup asked provocative questions of CMA about both the relationship of the museum to contemporary culture and the museum’s physical relationship to the city and its citizens. From those questions, the design evolved out of our deep understanding of the particularities of the site, the imperatives of the programmatic relationships, and the redefinition of the museum’s relationship to its physical and social context. The building design, then, is a reflection of the museum’s ambition to be more visible, relevant, and connected to the community as a meeting point between art, the public and the physical city.

bm Modular One in Washington, D.C. by Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

Sunday, September 20th, 2015

Article source: Robert M. Gurney, FAIA, Architect

A successful builder / developer with a history of constructing modular houses purchased a lot in a desirable neighborhood near Washington, D.C. with the intention of building a spec house.  When a potential buyer expressed interest in the lot, the developer proposed a modular house as a solution to a tight budget and time constraints.  However, the craftsman and colonial style modular houses typically built by the developer did not appeal to the potential client, who desired a light-filled, modern house.
