BOSTON, MA: A cultural icon for 134 years, the Boston Symphony Orchestra is world-renowned for the excellence and diversity of its performances. Broadcast from Symphony Hall, via radio, TV and the Internet, the BSO’s symphonic performances and the ‘Boston Pops’ concerts encompass the entire spectrum of classical and contemporary music, from Rachmaninoff and Beethoven to Aerosmith and Barry Manilow. After more than forty- five years of service in the broadcast and recording of thousands of concerts, the Symphony Hall’s Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft Control Room has earned a major upgrade.
Looking to connect its future to the past, Vail Systems, a communications software developer, found a perfect home in the former Chicago Daily News pressroom. The once industrial space has been transformed into a collaborative environment that inspires innovation. Unique structural elements organize functional requirements. Staff is located in large reconfigurable areas, while meeting spaces are organized under mezzanines and catwalks.
Looking like a missing tooth, this project helped to complete a gap in the urban fabric of this intimate residential row house street in Chicago. The row-houses were built in the 1890’s, showing wear and demolition over the years. Infilling this small lot provided challenges for the new residence; to not disturb adjacent 100 year old structures, party wall encroachments and to respect the existing scale of the street. The shoring of the adjacent structures and the house’s new foundations required complex design and construction, including a cantilevered concrete foundation wall to avoid interfering with the adjacent party wall footing.
The Houston Library and Exhibition Complex is the second installment in the initiation of dynamic architectural proposals for Houston, Texas and the greater development of ideas for American cities. The design functions along multiple trajectories of display corridors and library storage to interpolate exhibition with an expanded book collection for international reading and research. By having a series of harmonic manifolds of book collection space and the mixing of programmatic function for exhibition, it generates a dynamical system of flowing conditions which manifests with moments of extrapolation within the tectonic massing and circulation. Within the radiating tectonic corridors there is also included smaller botanical gardens which resonates with the surrounding landscape development as well, serving the community with a robust flower display and plaza.
The addition and renovation of the Texas Exes Alumni Center represents a significant expansion to the 1980s facility, designed by Charles Moore and Richard Dodge. The project complements the architectural sensibilities of the existing building with an updated material sensibility on the interior while taking advantage of the unique siting of the alumni center in relation to both the Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium to the east and Shoal Creek to the west, as well as creating a strong connection to the adjacent Texas Cowboys Pavilion, also designed by Miró Rivera Architects.
With close to 4,000 employees in 20 countries, Aimia specializes in data-driven marketing and loyalty analytics. Following the success of a previous tenant improvement project in a suburban office park, Aimia hired the same MSR design team to design its new space. With its new office, Aimia has moved to a mobile working employee strategy.
The reconstruction of a worn, 45-year-old, 95,000 square-foot library has resulted in a completely reimagined building. A 25,000 square-foot expansion encloses the formerly open entry with a glass atrium space and adds a partial third floor. New flexible spaces and technologies recognize evolving community needs with dedicated areas for children and teens, public meeting rooms, a making space, and a high-tech media lab. The design also incorporates a number of sustainable design strategies, some of the most prominent of which include solar panels and a green roof.
The 142-year-old Stewart Alternative Elementary School in Columbus, Ohio, has been transformed into a vibrant, modern center of learning for area students. Reopened in January 2015, the renovated and expanded school features high-performance Wausau Window and Wall Systems’ windows with access doors and between-glass blinds that enhance the building’s historic aesthetic. Wausau’s products also support the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC’s) LEED® for Schools Silver certification, which the school received in August 2015.

From its earliest inception, Carleton College’s Weitz Center for Creativity was imagined as much more than an arts building. While it does create much-needed new exhibit and performance spaces, the Weitz Center’s true mission is to serve as a working laboratory for creativity—not only in the arts, but across the entire curriculum. It positions the College as a national leader in arts programs by creating an environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, collaborative working skills, and cross-cultural exploration. An adaptive reuse of and addition to a former middle school, the new Weitz Center for Creativity houses the departments of studio arts, dance and theater, and cinema and media studies.
The adaptive reuse of Building 18 in Philadelphia’s historic Navy Yard is the latest addition to the award-winning, multi-phased corporate campus MSR has designed for Urban Outfitters. Built in 1904, it is the largest single-story building for an individual brand on the campus. The new office space features, layout, and aesthetic provide an atmosphere where creativity can flourish.
