On Friday morning during AIA Chicago, GRAPHISOFT is sponsoring a presentation entitled Increase Project Delivery Efficiency on Renovation Projects Utilizing BIM Strategies and Workflows. We get it – the session starts very early – 7 am but it will be SO WORTH IT.
Because renovation projects represent a huge chunk of the architecture projects out there today. They require careful planning, phasing, and coordination. And making sure that your model contains relevant information can be time-consuming. So maybe it isn’t in your wheelhouse to take on renovations, but it should be and can be efficiently done with ArchiCAD.
Presenters, Jennifer Costanzo, Principal, STR Partners and Kyla Kuhnlein | AIA | LEED AP BD+C are going to change how you view renovation projects. Their discussion about using renovation filters and override styles that are available in the ArchiCAD is not to be missed.
The techniques they’ll discuss saved them approximately 100 work hours – a major accomplishment considering the middle school they were tasked with updating was considered “functionally obsolete”.

Riverstone Structural Concepts is a structural engineering force to be reckoned with, having built a successful business by using ArchiCAD to be efficient, increase profits and shrink timelines.
There’s no need to just take just our word for it, you can hear Patrick Bird of Riverstone speak at AIA Chicago. He’s presenting on day one. We expect him to wow you with details about his adoption of ArchiCAD into his business model and workflow has increased revenues and reduced budget overages.
The presentation is scheduled for Thursday, from 12:30-1:30 at the CE Theatre D, booth 2266 entitled Architects, Engineers, and BIM: Working Together Has Never Been Easier. Patrick Bird, S.E. President, of RiverStone Structural Concepts will be joined by Veronica Schreibeis, NCARB, LEED AP, Principal Architect, Vera Iconica Architecture for the session. They will discuss the ways they leverage new collaboration technology to gain a significant competitive edge.
Schreibeis characterizes her firm’s work with Riverstone as a well-rehearsed dance. Since they began working together, employing the BIM server and “learning all the steps” involved and coordinating on a variety of projects ranging from small mobile cabins to large fire stations and community centers, the team at Vera Iconica Architecture can see the positive impact it has had.
Schreibeis describes the process, “What we’re doing is creating a virtual job site. A consultant can come into the model just as a sub-contractor would enter a job site. We work with engineers to interior designers to add their expertise as part of a growing, project-specific knowledge base housed in the virtual model. When detailed information from each field of expertise is modeled in 3D, coordination and collaboration are seamless. All team members, including the client and contractor, can fly through the model for quick cognition of the project, thus starting off on the same foot to ensure a smooth process.”

GRAPHISOFT is sponsoring one of the hottest events at AIA! The TweetUp!!!
Through the magic of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, tumblr, reddit, StumbleUpon, digg… not to mention blogs, forums, etc… we can communicate across time zones, state lines, country borders and even get to know people from other walks of life who share a common interest.
Social networking is very powerful in that one can meet people we normally wouldn’t in our regular day to day routine – but nothing beats a face-to-face for making a long-lasting connection.
So that “cool” that is social networking gets kicked up a notch to the point where you can actually shake hands with the person you’ve only known in the ether… it is going to be THE social event of AIA. The TweetUp gives you a chance to bring all your virtual relationships built through social networking into reality.

The unique three-day event that is Dwell on Design LA has become a must-see and must-do for interior design professionals and members of the AEC community. As it returns to the Los Angeles Convention Center June 20th through the 22nd, GRAPHISOFT will be exhibiting at booth #952.
ArchiCAD takes center stage on Friday, June 20th, as GRAPHISOFT sponsors two presentations highlighting how BIM can facilitate and streamline the workflow process for interior design.
BIM for High End Residential Design, presented by Mark Vacha is scheduled for 1:30 in meeting room 304C. Vacha’s presentation will discuss his use of ArchiCAD on a beachfront home in Ocean Beach, CA, with a “tight window” lot. He’ll help attendees learn how to apply an efficient BIM-based workflow to master a typical SD, DD, CD. He’ll go over Permitting, Bidding architectural processes and successfully integrating various disciplines (e.g., structural engineering, etc.) into the BIM workflow.
Session participants will also see how GRAPHISOFT’s presentation tool, BIMx can improve communications and accurately set expectations between designer, contractor, and client. BIMx has helped Vacha’s clients fall in love with their home before it’s built.
Also on Friday, Dwell on Design attendees can attend a presentation entitled Competitive Advantage with BIM Technology, by Meghan Beckmann of KAA Design Group. Beckmann’s presentation will highlight two of the firm’s recent projects that exemplify the potential for using ArchiCAD to compete for and win projects, improve design process efficiency, and add value for clients.

This time next week, we’ll be at this year’s AIA National Convention in Chicago, IL. During the AIA show, GRAPHISOFT will showcase the latest version of its premium BIM software. ArchiCAD® 18. As the world’s brightest architects, designers, innovators, provocateurs, and thought leaders come together in the heart of America’s architectural epicenter— GRAPHISOFT will demonstrate the new solutions and key customer focused initiatives found in ArchiCAD 18.
ArchiCAD 18 streamlines the BIM workflow with built-in CineRender, a brand new render engine with high-end photorealistic rendering capabilities previously found only in the professional visualization application CINEMA 4D – now available right inside the BIM tool. The integration of CineRender, MAXON’s world-class CINEMA 4D rendering engine into ArchiCAD 18, brings this capability closer to a much wider range of users.

Compelling Presentations with BIMx
Custom Timber Log Homes manages building design of log homes for the Eastern Region of the US and Canada. Chris Sparks is part owner of the company and tells us he sees each project through to blueprints and construction completion with ArchiCAD. As a long-time ArchiCAD user, Sparks has been familiar with BIMx – GRAPHISOFT’s presentation tool – and has been capitalizing on its features since its inception in 2012. The application’s ability to demonstrate the plans and designs of the log homes his company creates provides a wonderful tool. So when BIMx Docs – the next generation of presentation tool that combines 2D drawings with the 3D documents – was released in October of 2013, Sparks was anxious to try it.
“I’ve been using ArchiCAD since version 8 and BIMx for a year and a half. I always get fantastic feedback – people are blown away by what I can show them and what the software itself can do. With the advent of BIMx Docs – being able to map the BIM and the construction documents – well, we’re at a whole other level of wow.”

Ever since Austin, TX based Webber + Studio Architects begain using ArchiCAD on its custom, high-end residential projects since switching from Vectorworks in 2012, the firm has seen the transition improve efficiency, workflow and overall production value. The workflow team members used then involved creating all their 3D work in Sketch Up and switch to Vectorworks for 2D drawings. Errors and missed coordination were common occurrences because of all the back and forth associated with that process.

I might be dating myself with this reference, but as soon as I hung up the phone from interviewing John Black of Lapis Design Partners – I immediately heard “Oh Yeah!!!” and the sound of the Kool-Aid pitcher crashing through a cinder block wall… Why? Well, because in his own words, Black has admitted to drinking the ArchiCAD Kool-Aid – and this is his story.
It all began for Black with ArchiCAD on version five. He told me he believes the best thing Autocad ever did was drop their Macintosh platform. Luckily for him, it happened just at the moment he began looking for a software program. Having been a Mac user, with no plans to change, he was ready to go from hand-drafting right into ArchiCAD. As with many users we’ve interviewed here on the blog, he had two weeks to get up to speed enough to create a design and presentation. (more…)
