Webber + Studio Architects Dig Deeper Into Design with ArchiCAD
June 9th, 2014 by Mary Moscarello
Ever since Austin, TX based Webber + Studio Architects begain using ArchiCAD on its custom, high-end residential projects since switching from Vectorworks in 2012, the firm has seen the transition improve efficiency, workflow and overall production value. The workflow team members used then involved creating all their 3D work in Sketch Up and switch to Vectorworks for 2D drawings. Errors and missed coordination were common occurrences because of all the back and forth associated with that process.
“In ArchiCAD, everything is updated in real time – for example, if a roof had to be raised by two feet in the model, you’d have to transfer that change to all the elevations and sections by hand. When you compare that arduous task to what is required in updating changes to an ArchiCAD model, the difference is immense. We don’t have to re-do every drawing every time there’s a change – which would essentially be adding two hours of work on something that can be done instantaneously. ArchiCAD saves a ton of time, giving us more chances to dig into the things that actually matter to the project. Our customers get better value from the work we do. ”
Tackling the Transition
When the firm went through its transition from the previous workflow to using ArchiCAD – there was a learning curve involved. But looking back, according to designer Aaron Sleator, the time spent is viewed as worthwhile.
“This is the first truly BIM environment I’ve been engaged in. The best advantage is being able to design freely and let the software do the building specific tasks for you. If I’m using ArchiCAD to make a rectangular beam, the program can recognize its parts as steel, insulation, etc… setting it up correctly most definitely saves me time as I move through the design process.”
Expanding with the Advantages
Teamwork functionality found in ArchiCAD has increased efficiency so much so that the firm has been able to take on large projects outside the immediate Austin, Texas area. Case in point, the firm is working on a series of six fairly large homes that range from 12,000 square feet and up – designed on a very short deadline.
“Most of our work is in the Central Texas area, but we are on the boards with a project out of Dubai that really highlights how much we needed the streamlining that ArchiCAD provides. This project required us to jump on the project all at once – since there was a series of fast turnarounds. We had to submit an initial design in five days, get comments back and incorporate them in just three days. We used Teamwork, assigning one person to be in charge of one floor plan, another team member works on details in another section – all the work was synchronized.”
