ArchiCAD and the AEC Hackathon

Tuesday, October 28th, 2014

Professionals in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction fields converged on the University of Washington campus during September to fire up their synapses and hack away at research and development through innovation. So why should we care about this and what does it mean for the industry as a whole?

willard hackathon

The event began with the realization that if one were to measure the amount of time and energy that one of the largest industries in the world spends on thinking up new ways to do things the measurement would be far from proportionate. With an eye on remedying this problem, the AEC Hackathon attempts to create an environment where the seeds of innovation can be planted, perhaps birthed for the benefit of all.

During the last Hackathon, participants suggested the use of drones to fly over buildings and capture information. Another idea involved the incorporation of the Facebook-like timeline so that team members on a project could visualize the progress of a project in a collaborative environment, the projects progress and read team members comments which would be stored chronologically.

Wednesday, October 15th, 2014

Long time ArchiCAD firm, Terry and Terry, was recently named the San Francisco AIA Interior Design Award winner for their Hybrid Design project.

Graphic design firm, Hybrid Design contracted Terry & Terry to help them with a renovation of an historic brick building located in the Jackson Square historic district of San Francisco for their office. Terry & Terry had to work closely with respect to the historic location and took care to modernize while complimenting the older parts of the building. The building had to be brought up to code with ADA requirements for the entrance and restrooms.

MDT Designs Heartland Health Center with ArchiCAD

Monday, October 13th, 2014

This article was first published on the BIM Engine Blog by ArchiCAD.

Our readers know that we have some amazing firms and sole proprietors using ArchiCAD. Manske Dieckmann Thompson (MDT) is just such a firm that has been profiled here in our blog before. Since we last caught up with this Chicago based design firm – the team has had several projects come to fruition – one in particular officially opened to the public.

Construction on their most recent project, the Heartland Health Center Devon (HHCD) began in October of last year and completed at the end of this summer. Modeled entirely in ArchiCAD, MDT relied on the software to manage and coordinate data from engineers working on the project.

Architects Enable Preparedness with Beehive Shelter Systems Using BIM

Monday, October 6th, 2014

Beehive Shelter Systems, is an architectural / engineering firm led by Lane Lythgoe. The firm is dedicated to NBCE (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, Electromagnetic) Bunker design throughout the United States. In recent years Beehive Shelter Systems has seen global interest in its bunker projects. Major disasters, civil unrest and the threat of terrorism has led citizens to focus on being prepared for emergencies – sending the bunker industry into a growth boom period that does not appear to be slowing.

ArchiCAD has been the software of choice in use by Lythgoe and the team at Beehive for the past eleven years to build safe environments for the family and property. Lythgoe’s expertise and knowledge of the highly specialized bunker requirements has been recognized in his recently receiving a U.S. patent for a pre-cast bunker design that was completely designed in ArchiCAD.
