VernerJohnson Relies on ARCHICAD During the A to Z of Museum Planning

Thursday, September 24th, 2015

Boston-based VernerJohnson, Inc. specializes in planning and designing museums and the outdoor public spaces they occupy. Their planning work involves developing a complete facility program to understand what types of spaces within the museum are required, how large they need to be, and how they need to relate to one another. According to Jonathan Kharfen, AIA LEED  Senior Associate at VernerJohnson, the firm relies on ARCHICAD to develop a master plan, which can then be used to assist existing or new museums develop their mission and be successful in achieving it.

“We help the museum administration and board evaluate their long-term goals and create a building that supports those goals. For example, they will need to decide if the museum or visitor center will have a strong educational component in addition to exhibits – such as classrooms, or performance spaces – or whether it will host evening events such as lectures, conferences or cocktail/dinner parties. We use our ARCHICAD model to develop a design that encapsulates their goals and expresses their mission in an engaging and unique way.”

Once that overall goal is established in the master plan, the team at VernerJohnson works to further develop the vision into a full concept design. VernerJohnson also helps develop staffing requirements, an economic strategic plan and on projects where a new facility is being created, VernerJohnson will also assist in site selection.

The process of selecting an appropriate site for the future facility’s needs can be a lengthy one. Such was the case for a visitor center along Route 70 in Riley County Kansas. The firm worked on several different site options before the project began. VernerJohnson’s planning and site selection portfolio also includes the National Museum of African American History and Culture on the Mall in Washington, D.C.

GRAPHISOFT Introduces Rhino–Grasshopper–ARCHICAD Connection

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2015

Announcing an ARCHICAD Interoperability Increase

Exciting news from GRAPHISOFT that fills a gap in the design process between early stage design and building information modeling. GRAPHISOFT announced the release of a public beta version of a Rhino-Grasshopper-ARCHICAD connection. The enhanced connection opens up creative options for architects. The existing natural link between Rhino and Grasshopper empowers them to start and modify their designs in any of the three design environments — Rhino, Grasshopper or ARCHICAD

ARCHICAD RhinoIt is an industry-first, bidirectional “real-time” connection – giving architects and designers freedom to use their favorite algorithmic design tool (Grasshopper) in combination with professional BIM software (ARCHICAD) through a best-in-class iterative design workflow. Now it is easier than ever to explore multiple design variations, create and fine-tune building details and structures using algorithms without exchanging files.

Native file format support for Rhinoceros found in ARCHICAD already let designers open and save Rhino project files of any size or complexity – the extension of this compatibility makes the benefits of using BIM at an early design phase more accessible.

As Tomohiko Yamanashi, Executive Officer and Deputy Head of Architectural Design Department at Nikken Sekkei put it, ”This connection will also help align the traditional design process with the computational design approach. I am looking forward to seeing BIM become a friendlier design tool for architects.”

The public beta test begins on September 28 – click here to sign-up for the beta or to register for a free, online webinar on October 6.

Invest in Training with an ARCHICAD Consultant

Thursday, September 10th, 2015

GRAPHISOFT has long advocated for user training and puts an increasing amount of focus on that aspect of servicing our customers. Basic tutorials and resource links are embedded in the software and users know they can contact tech support nearly around the clock for advice.

ARCHICAD Help CenterIn addition to the online help center, YouTube channel, social media and social networking avenues for ARCHICAD users to get advice and training, GRAPHISOFT employs several BIM consultants who have valuable insight into what issues we are seeing from a user standpoint with the software. GRAPHISOFT also creates opportunities for our customers to benefit from in-person, on-on-one classes as well as ARCHICAD boot camp for both new and experienced users.

BIM consultants have the distinction of being able to interact with the same offices on a regular basis. The consultants will often be called upon to develop strategies in which ARCHICAD can assist on specific projects. Through that relationship and with their background as licensed architects, GRAPHISOFT BIM consultants provide a level of assistance that is unmatched in the industry.

Transitioning from AutoCAD to ARCHICAD

Things changed in January of 2015 for the team at Hlevel Architects. The team made the transition from AutoCAD to ARCHICAD. The growing firm, which specializes in both residential and commercial projects recently completed several projects with ARCHICAD.

Although still new to the software, relatively speaking, the team at Hlevel has come to know that that transition was worth the effort. Firm principle, Michaela Reiterer Henning explains, “After having used ARCHICAD for residential, interior commercial and renovation projects, we now truly understand the potential of the software. We are happy that we have moved toward using such a powerful design tool that helps us collaborate with clients, consultants and contractors.”

ARCHICAD Hlevel BIMOne such project – a 4,500 square foot, two story residential (single family) home provided a chance for the team at Hlevel to experience firsthand how ARCHICAD can assist in designing and creating the model. In a similar way, the benefits of ARCHICAD became apparent to the team as they worked on a multi-family dwelling – which amounted to a tenant improvement project and required heavy interior work.

“On the tenant improvement project, we were able to use ARCHICAD to create the images and sections all the way through to the cabinetry. We found it beneficial to save the interiors in the model and make shop drawings for those details. We saved loads of time because of all the detailing we created. Equally beneficial was the visualization in ARCHICAD as we created the dormers in the single family home. In AutoCAD, it would have been a very complicated process, because the ceiling heights change.”
