ARCHICAD is UK’s ‘BIM Product of the Year’ Seven Years Running

Monday, November 20th, 2017

Exciting news for GRAPHISOFT from the Construction Computing Awards – our BIM software won the prestigious BIM Product of the Year award at the eleventh annual Construction Computing Magazine Awards in the United Kingdom. This is the seventh year in a row that ARCHICAD has been honored with the top BIM product award.

ARCHICAD has dominated the BIM Product of the Year category. As one of the few awards covering the use of IT in design and construction, the awards are known for reflecting actual users’ experiences with products for delivering projects.

“We are pleased and proud that ARCHICAD continues to be recognized by our users and readers alike in this annual competition,” said Akos Pfemeter, Vice President of Marketing, GRAPHISOFT.  “Our year-on-year success in these awards underscores the value designers attach to the extensive, regular enhancements we make to ARCHICAD,” he added.

The Construction Computing Awards; affectionately known as “The Hammers”, showcase and reward the technology, tools and solutions for the effective design, construction, maintenance and modification of commercial buildings, residential and social housing and civil engineering projects of all sizes. For 12 years now, the Construction Computing Awards event has become a place where members of the industry gather to network and exchange ideas while having fun.

Along with the highly coveted product and company awards won by GRAPHISOFT, the company’s client, Bond Bryan Digital, won a third BIM Project of the Year for the ‘LEGO Architecture meets BIM’ project. A blog series related to the project is available here.

Congratulations to all the winners!

By Design – Firm Profile, KURV Architecture

Wednesday, November 15th, 2017

By Design continues as we examine how NYC-based KURV Architecture responds to demand from developers and redefines what it means to compete as an architect. Learn how ARCHICAD supports their proactive stance.

KURV’s unique approach employs ARCHICAD and Grasshopper. That connectivity allows him to analyze available lots and sites that they may want to use in a proper manner. They use the software to perform feasibility studies and when appropriate, begin the project themselves.

Ideal Project, Ideal Software for Galbraith Carnahan

Monday, November 13th, 2017

For Milwaukee-based, Galbraith Carnahan Architects, (GCA) seeking the ideal project begins with identifying an ideal client. Nick Carnahan characterizes that as someone who is focused on the world outside of their building – or a business owner who cares about his/her staff.

On a recently completed project which entailed renovating a 1920s greenhouse complex to create an urban farm illustrates that perfect match of client to project to firm. A couple bought an abandoned greenhouse located in the center of a residential neighborhood of Dubuque Iowa. The property’s assets prior to the work of GCA included a greenhouse which had fallen into disrepair and other areas that needed some TLC. All the glass was gone, only a steel frame stood.

“These retirees wanted to do something significant with the next chapter of their lives to serve what is an economically challenged area of the city,” explained Carnahan. “Their goal was to create a legacy project that could benefit the community.”

And so, it will. Aside from being a primary residence for its owners, Dubuque residents will be able to take healthy cooking classes, learn how to grow their own food using traditional or aquaponics methods in the new greenhouse space. It will also serve as an event center to host events, weddings or conferences.

“Portions of the greenhouse presented a challenge in that we need to bring the heating and cooling up to modern standards. As we drew up the plans – including the existing building – ARCHICAD was helpful in documenting the intricate trusses and other aspects of the structure. Being able to go in and measure and build it out in 3D allowed us to visualize it clearly for our client.”

Renderings in ARCHICAD served the team at GCA well – providing a way for the clients and community to see the project’s potential.

CORE Depends on ARCHICAD

Years of Coordinating, Designing and Managing

Core architecture + design (CORE) recently completed a downtown Washington DC office building at 600 Massachusetts Avenue. The 400,000 -square foot 11 story LEED Platinum office building features five outdoor terraces on different levels throughout the building. The brand-new building also includes four levels underground, with 3 of those levels dedicated to parking. Other features include a four story atrium, and forward thinking amenities.

The project had its start 18 years ago, all the while being designed in ARCHICAD by Ron Ngiam and the team at CORE.

Having begun the project in ARCHICAD 9 and upgrading through to ARCHICAD 20 begged the question: to upgrade or not. Ngiam says they chose to migrate the project through each upgrade so that they’d maintain the integrity of the project and the wealth of information they’d accumulated throughout its life cycle.

“True, the potential to lose information might convince others to abandon the upgrade path, but at the end of the day – we chose to upgrade. The benefits of being able to consult with the team and access so much data about the building that we acquired over the years definitely outweighed that risk.”

Making the Switch to ARCHICAD – Sylla International

Thursday, October 5th, 2017

Software transition stories happen all the time, whether we hear about them or not. In learning about the story of an architectural firm switching from one software to another, the reader needs to fully understand the why. One story worth checking out is that of the firm SYLLA INTERNATIONAL.

Sylla is an architectural firm based in Tampa, Florida which made the decision to switch their BIM software from one they’d been using for nearly two decades. The firm transitioned from using Bentley Microstation and Bentley Architecture to ARCHICAD. This surprising change took time and careful consideration, as owner and president, Cheikh T. Sylla described to us in an interview.

The firm works on a mix of projects which include large education buildings that can have construction costs up to and including a budget of $60 million or more. Sylla International operates with a small, yet powerful staff, aided by their new workflow and software of choice. In fact, since making the switch Cheikh T. Sylla – owner and principal has been confident he made the right decision in choosing ARCHICAD software by GRAPHISOFT. Having downsized its staff in order to compete in a slow economy, Sylla International has been able to maintain an efficiency and handle sizable projects in spite of reduced manpower.

Elevating Workflow with ARCHICAD

Friday, September 22nd, 2017

The relationship between ARCHICAD and March Studio began three years ago. The branded architecture firm, located in Santa Monica, California recalls their first project in which they used ARCHICAD to design the Cinema Media Arts Center at Providence High School in Burbank, CA. The project became a prototype for future work, ushering in a movement away from producing designs in 2D CAD and SketchUp. With the change in software came an expansion in the range of services the firm could offer their clients.

During the project, Summer Vaughn March Studio Project Architect, used the Providence 3D model to develop a new office template in ARCHICAD, setting the foundation for consistency and ease in future documentation. It even enhanced their ability to create compelling design presentations. Early in the design process, she could share white model renders with the client, allowing them to follow the development of the design, moving towards full material renders as the design was dialed in.
