Trevor Abramson, FAIA, and Douglas Teiger, AIA, lead California-based Abramson Teiger Architects (ATA) and its team of dynamic architects and designers. With over 200 built projects across North America, ATA’s passion for excellence has been recognized with over thirty design awards. Their multi-faceted practice, initially focusing on single-family residences, now encompasses ecclesiastical commissions, educational facilities, creative offices, retail developments, and varied commercial buildings. The firm seeks to balance practical needs and dramatic artistic expression while treating each project as an exercise in collaboration.
ATA has been using BIM on larger scale projects of late. Specifically, the firm used the software on PLATFORM, a 220,000 SF mixed-use complex, and on a 92,000 square foot retail and creative office development, both located in the Culver City neighborhood of Los Angeles.
ALL ARCHICAD ALL THE TIME
Winning with Open BIM
ATA begins the majority of their projects in ARCHICAD, especially the larger ones. Often, the firm encounters situations where a client requires construction documents created in Revit. Even in those cases, they choose to first work in ARCHICAD because they feel it is a better tool for conceptual design work, rendering, working with steel and most importantly, IFC and model coordination.

Congratulations to the team at Chicago-based Landon Bone Baker Architects on their recent 2016 AIA/HUD Secretary’s Award!

DA+HC represents what is possible when public, private and non-profit sectors work together to give new life to an area of the city that had been ignored. The vacant 1980s Chicago Housing Authority project is now a vital arts and culture hub in the city’s Grand Crossing neighborhood. Existing abandoned buildings became the framework for a community-focused and artist-led creative incubator.

The power of the podcast is well-documented. At their origination, podcasts – or “audio blogging” as the practice was first named – were a handy way to share information, though at first they did not enjoy widespread adoption. So much has changed since the. By the year 2004, broadband internet access and portable audio devices helped podcasts transition from those early days, through a trendy buzz word type of category to the distribution method it is today. Currently more than 115-thousand English-speaking podcasts exist, contributing to an ever louder online volume.
The Archispeak Podcast is one podcast I’d recommend checking out. The trio of hosts; Evan Troxel, Neal Pann, and Cormac Phalen get together regularly to have casual conversations about all things architecture. What I like about their style is they celebrate the triumphs and highlight successes AND are unafraid to point out failures or situations where they think the proverbial bar was missed.

Toronto-based, Discovery Dream Homes, creates custom log and timber frame homes using ARCHICAD. At any given time, some 40 projects are in progress – all managed and built in ARCHICAD.
A model home just outside the city shows potential clients what Discovery Dream Homes can create – but the team relies heavily on creating 3D presentations in ARCHICAD and shares them via the award-winning presentation app, BIMx.
“We use BIMx for every project we do. It had a profound impact on our presentation style from the moment it was introduced to us,” explained Shawn Hunter. “When people are trying to decide whether to hire us or not, BIMx tips the scales in our favor every time.”

What’s new in ARCHICAD 20
Enhanced Information Management
Storing: ARCHICAD 20 helps architects and designers to utilize their Building Information Model as the central storage place for all project information. They can even easily store and maintain design information that was not created using CAD or BIM tools, like Excel spreadsheets.
Displaying: ARCHICAD 20 takes that well-structured information and helps architects use it efficiently. Smart filters and a brand new graphical override help designers to freely change the representation of any 2D and 3D views of elements with similar properties. The result? A number of workflows that make communication, coordination and model checking much more efficient.
