McInturff Architects pushes the use of ARCHICAD to its furthest point. On a recent residential project, Christopher Boyd, principal of the firm describes how the software helped his team design what would become a 10K SF beach house in just nine months. Building restrictions in the area forbid construction during summer months, which limited his team to having a third of the time typically needed for a project of that size. For added difficulty, McInturff found themselves working with brand new partners this time around.
“We get reminders of how powerful our software choice is from time to time,” explained Boyd. “This project was no exception. Usually you need 18-24 months to get a house of this size and complexity built. I knew we needed to produce a set of drawings that would help a contractor who was unfamiliar with our work. Knowing that we’d be developing drawings as construction began, spending minimal time fixing them was a must. Enter BIMx.”

The Elk Creek Revitalization Offices and Conferencing Center currently being designed by Maryland based ARCHICAD firm, Clark Design Group (CDG) demonstrates the power of ARCHICAD on multi-use buildings. The project – a massive renovation of an existing warehouse space – requires gutting everything inside the building. The design idea centers around creating a sort of “Main St.” feel, opening the end walls with storefront and curtain walls so that visitors can see from one end to the other.
The 50k square-ft collaborative office and conference center embraces one of the newest trends in office spaces – featuring a cafeteria, conference rooms with state of the art A/V and video conferencing technology capabilities. Two things have become very clear on this project, the team must work to take advantage of very little natural light in the interior spaces and must work quickly to meet an anticipated construction start date in September.
The natural light problem is being addressed by popping up a clerestory in the middle of the roof. A skilled ARCHICAD 20 team handles the deadline and fast-pace of this project.
Richard Rinehart, CDG Associate Principal notes that this undertaking highlights how well ARCHICAD outpaces other software and helps the firm collaborate with other platforms.

Subscribe and Save!
ARCHICAD for Beginners is a four-and-a-half-hour course that teaches the basics of ARCHICAD 20. For a limited time, the course is available to new subscribers of Black Spectacles at their site with a 10% discount. Use code ARCHICAD10 to activate the offer.
Supporting New Users
Our commitment to supporting new users is unwavering. We want to accelerate implementation of our powerful BIM tool for newcomers. We see it as a win-win for current and future architects and designers.
Beginning with simple navigation instruction, the course works through the software in a methodical manner that is easy to follow. Within the first module, users learn how to draw walls, add stories, and place objects, columns & beams. Upon completion, course students gain familiarity with documentation in ARCHICAD, as well as how to place labels, identify sections & elevations, and incorporate external file formats.
Led by Josh Bone, architect and former BIM specialist recognized for expertise in technology integration the easy to follow course shows how to create detailed 3D models quickly and efficiently.
