The advantages and disadvantages of different approaches to the modeling of surface runoff have long been debated by the water industry and academics alike. The detailed hydraulics of surface runoff is considerably complex and varies both temporally and spatially. Due to the multifarious relationships associated with runoff processes, the mathematical functions required to compute and represent these are also considerably complex and so empirical equations and approaches have historically been developed to describe them for various circumstances.
