This report shows the survey results from a study conducted in late 2004 by Aberdeen Group.
The following are key findings from Aberdeen Group’s survey of users of product portfolio management (PPM) solutions in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries:
- Buyers of next-generation PPM solutions are very interested in enter-prisewide benefits. However, if they let project managers roll out the new solutions one project at a time, they are susceptible to underachiev-ing their potential value.
- One of the contributing factors to the construction industry’s low pro-ductivity rate is the stand-alone nature of technologies used in this in-dustry.
- Project managers look to optimize the results of their project(s) and not necessarily the enterprise that employs them.
- Huge benefits (e.g., expediting payments from customers, maximum utilization of equipment) are possible when AEC firms implement PPM solutions with an eye toward enterprise optimization.

RetainWall is a software mainly designed for the purpose of designing a concrete or masonry retaining wall. The wall may retain soil or other granular material. It analises the stability of the wall based on the loads and the resulting base pressure, sliding and excentricities. Loads applied on the wall may consist of self weight, soil pressure, water pressure, live and seismic loads. If the wall is a reinforced concrete structure, the software also supports the reinforcement design. In addition, a soil pressure calculator is also provided.
RetainWall is designed to be an easy application, on-screen trial-and-error method and quick solution finding of the design. A familiar designer can design the wall within minutes. Complete outputs can be viewed on screen or printed.
Operation of the software begins from the initial dimensioning of the wall, earth surface and water levels by clicking on the given dimensions. Next is inputing material properties of the wall, soil, water and rinforcement bars. External loads given consist of live load on the ground surface, seismic load as a horizontal seismic coefficient and any concentrated loads if required. Results of the wall stability can be obtain immediately. If they are not satisfied then another trial can be made very quickly. Final results can be printed.
Using the internal forces of the wall, reinforced concrete design can also be done very quickly. It requires only bar diameters and spacings of the reinforcements.
RetainWall supports three unit system, i.e. metric, SI and British.

Abstract:
The issue of communication between the disciplines involved in
a construction project has been the subject of research activities for many
years. The construction industry has a long tradition of collaborative
working between the members of the construction team. At the design
stage, this has traditionally been based on physical meetings. This paper
considers the shortcomings of the current state of the Architecture,
Engineering and Construction (AEC) design process and gives an
overview of the design, implementation and evaluation of a COllaborative
Design Environment (CODE) system. The system's facilities allowed for
active human-centred collaboration, and confirmed that the Internet is a
feasible and accessible technology for hosting multi-disciplinary and
distributed collaborative design work.
Introduction
In today's global market, the Architecture, Engineering and Construction
(AEC) operations are spreading around the world. Not only marketing and
production, but also design and development are influenced by
globalisation. New challenges are emerging constantly, which require
global solutions for geographically distributed building design and
construction. Due to the global nature of the current building construction
and the evolving impact of IT on the design process, the AEC design
project activities are continuously changing. These activities require
support with communication, interaction, integration, design facilities, and
shared up-to-date design specification. IT facilities such as the Internet
can potentially provide integrated collaboration environments satisfying
these requirements.
The AEC design processes considered as highly fragmented so the
responsibility for design and construction is often broken into many small
parts handled by different actors. At the same time, the quantity of data to
be dealt with is constantly growing. Building design often requires
collaborative working between members of geographically distributions
design teams. Therefore, the need for effective information and
communication technologies becomes necessary. |

18578 RetainWall, retaining |

15976 Mesh Transitioning and |
Featured Paper by Ashraf Habibullah, M. Iqbal Suharwardy
In the application of the Finite Element Analysis Method, the most time consuming task is
usually the creation and modification of the finite element mesh of the system. Not to mention the
fact that creation of mesh transitions from coarse to fine meshes can be very tedious. Also
matching up node points to create compatible meshes at intersecting planes, such as walls and
floors can be very labor intensive. And even if the mesh generation is automated the mesh
transitioning usually produces irregular or skewed elements that may perform poorly. This may
have adverse effects on the design, especially in regions of stress concentration, such as in the
vicinity of intersecting planes. |

Featured Paper by Laurel M. Sheppard
Although computer-aided design is widely used in
the architecture-engineering-construction (AEC)
industry, the exchange of information is still largely a
manual process, where 2D paper drawings are
reviewed to identify conflicts. Obviously, this process
is time consuming and inefficient not only do many
conflicts go undetected but it’s nearly impossible to
quickly determine how design changes will affect the
project’s cost and schedule. Thus, an average project
will lose 8 to 15 percent of labor costs due to mistakes
that cause change orders, delays, and rework. |

14866 eReview |
eReview allows you to view and markup many different types of documents and drawings without having or using the application that created them. Markups and annotations are non-destructive; i.e., the original document is never changed; rather, the markups, annotations and comments are saved in a corollary file, providing a history of suggested changes. This process prevents uncontrolled changes to a document/drawing while protecting the integrity of the document/drawing under review. Collaboration simplifies and enhances the review process. What used to be sequential, time-consuming and difficult to accomplish is now intuitive, natural, and in real-time within a fully collaborative Web environment. Real-time collaboration saves time, money, travel, and allows better and quicker decisions. Real-time collaboration and ad-hoc workflow tools reduce the reaction time of the corporations much faster and enable them to respond to the constantly changing needs quickly and effectively. It also helps to collaborate on unstructured data and documents, capture the tacit knowledge and helps create a corporate memory of meetings that are searchable and repayable. |

Most CAE software products announce: “Our software helps you to make an optimal design of
your structures”. It this achieved in reality?
In common sense one talks about optimisation of structures, but in fact one optimises only a few
chosen structural parts. A design engineer searches for the minimal size of the cross-section that
satisfies the design code, he/she tries to find the minimal number of bolts needed in a specific
steel connection, he/she is searching for minimal required area of reinforcement steel in a
concrete beam. |

24102 Construction CEOs - how |
The criteria for which owners are selecting construction companies to build buildings are changing rapidly. Cost is still the number one factor in why companies win new business. The second is the owners' belief that the construction company can effectively apply IT technology to projects in order to reduce cost and stay on schedule. Within three years, every major construction company will have all major processes integrated by IT. The interesting thing is that many CEOs of these companies don't even know it yet. |

21613 Using FMDesktop to Track |
We are often asked whether it is possible to use FMDesktop for "outside the building" facilities
management. Normally, when you are working with "outside the building" spatial information, one thinks
about GIS applications like ESRI's Arc/Info & Arc/View and Autodesk's MAP and MapGuide. There are
certainly situations where being able to handle all this spatial information in a single application would be
very convenient. Colleges and universities, large office complexes, and military bases certainly qualify as
users who would like to manage both inside and outside spatial information in a single application. |

15036 TITAN busts theft ring |
At 10:00 PM under the protection of night, three thieves crept into a quiet jobsite off US Highway 550. When their target, a John Deere 310SG, didn’t start they suspected a master disconnect switch was the cause. They immediately left the jobsite for cables to wire around the disconnect switch. Upon their return they wired across the battery, got the backhoe running and began driving it down the street with their white GMC truck close behind. Before they even got a mile from the site, several police cruisers performed a felony stop on the backhoe/truck tandem and caught the vandals red handed. By the time owner Bill Joiner arrived on the scene, the three thieves were handcuffed and lying on the ground. |

25753 On The Go: Understanding |
Approximately 90 percent of enterprises employ remote workers — those who work outside the traditional office some or all of the time, according to Gartner, Inc., an information technology research and advisory company. In the construction industry, for example, business development executives regularly travel in pursuit of new clients, while project managers move from one job site to the next. And today’s mobile construction workforce relies on remote access to e-mail, fileservers and business-critical data in order to grow their firm’s business and share project management information. However, the use of mobile devices poses security risks that cannot be underestimated. |

15037 Prominent rental house |
Mark* has been a rental house owner for years and understands the risks of renting equipment. Normally he gets his rental payments on time, but there are always those instances when the customer is late and nowhere to be found. Like so many rental house owners, Mark used to lament the old way of collecting payment: “You call and call but get nowhere and end up leaving messages. You just feel powerless knowing your machines are out there running and making money that you are being strung along on”.
Once Mark equipped his fleet with the powerful TITAN Equipment Monitoring System, that all changed quickly. |

The apparel market is a $172 billion retail market nationwide. Whether you buy designer fashions, or whether you go to your local discount store and purchase off the rack, the garment you buy is part of this $172 billion industry. And, designer fashion, or wholesale off-the-rack, the process of producing the garment is the same…first the garment is designed and a pattern is made and marked. Then the pattern is used to cut fabric which is sewn into the finished garment.
Today's garment production uses an automated CAD process in all aspects. The pattern is digitized into a garment CAD system which directs plotters and cutters. Currently, Hand digitizing one pattern can take many hours of production time. |

22473 Workplace Performance |
The survey addresses the following key issues:
1. To what extent have enterprises established operational, financial, and “green objectives” for their workplace assets and operations
2. To what degree are enterprises adopting more integrated, process-based disciplines to meet these objectives
3. What are the key performance indicators underlying their workplace objectives
The workplace has experienced dramatic changes in the last ten years. Worker mobility enabled by network and wireless technology has revolutionized work styles and workplace culture; that require new system support tools and services. And the “green revolution” centers on workplace sustainability, particularly relating to energy efficiency, and long-term sustainability of enterprise buildings and workplace environments. These trends coupled with a continued drive toward workplace cost containment; worker productivity, and asset efficiency have now risen to the senior executive agenda; demanding new levels of sophistication, precision, and excellence in the management of workplace assets, services and processes.
We conducted the survey to develop insights about how enterprise workplace organizations are addressing these critical issues and priorities. |

It has been fantastic for getting the design process started, and for showing our clients exactly what to expect. We have even taken the models to the next level where we have figured out and designed the timber structure and all the framing in the model at which point we have been able to extract 2D cuts straight out of the model to create Plans, Elevations and Sections for working drawings. As well, we have been exporting the 3D info of our timber frames to a Timber Frame manufacturer's 3D Milling Machine Software called 'CaddWorks'. They import the data in 3D and then translate it into a platform they can use to drive the milling machine Directly. I have included a few of the images from various projects we have produced in the past year for your review. I have also include some rendered images that were made from exporting the sketch-up model to an AutoCAD model, then importing that Cad model into 3D studio Vis. for rendering. These are the photo realistic Shoji images. |

BE&K recently conducted an evaluation of AVEVA's Laser Model Interface to see how it could impact our working procedures. Before using Laser Model Interface, it took us four steps to go from capturing as-built conditions with 3D laser scanning, to being able to use and modify that
information inside AVEVA PDMS: a scanner vendor application, a CAD application, and PDMS, with translators back and forth between each one. We implemented Laser Model Interface on a trial
project and found that we could reduce this process to a single step. We expect this streamlined process to save more than three hours per pipe modelled and to significantly reduce the risk of error.' |

Since its inception in 1946, CCCSD has been a leader in adopting innovative strategies
to improve their services and protect the environment. Some of these strategies have
been technicalâ”for example, replacing its chlorine gas disinfection system with a

because of the Districtâ™s commitment to utilizing technology to improve operations.
In 1988, the District began using a DOS-based program for asset management of the
collection system. While the program was useful in automating many of the Districtâ™s
activities and business processes, it wasnâ™t comprehensive enoughâ”in fact, the
agency had to begin developing additional programs in-house to meet its needs. |

In the Netherlands each municipality has a regulatory requirement to reduce the combined sewer overflows by at least 50 percent, and the reduction has to be proved not by measurements, but by model calculations. To monitor this, the water board tests the calculated annual overflow volume and sometimes the extreme overflow volume with a return period of one and two years. For this calculation the use of rain series of at least ten years is compulsory |

Only a few years ago the use of network models for water distribution in New Zealand was mostly limited to basic planning and investigation work. However the introduction of several key pieces of legislation is fundamentally changing the role of network modeling throughout the country. This has resulted in a drive towards all-mains models built to high standards with modern GIS and modeling software packages. The influence of experienced modelers drawn from overseas to work in New Zealand is also evident, as model building and calibration standards are now matching or in some cases exceeding the best international standards. |

15919 Publishing Data to the |
Distributing spatial and tabular attribute data over a Web-based network is a powerful and
effective communication method but public agencies should carefully consider all the business and
technical issues before starting out. There is much more at stake than the cost of the software –
one must consider the total cost of implementation and ongoing application maintenance over the
application life cycle. There is no argument that publishing an agency’s data to the Web, whether
intranet, extranet, or Internet has value and makes good business sense. By doing so, all
persons in the agency can have data access without being a technical expert. This short white
paper presents some of the issues that often are overlooked when implementing a Web-based
GIS application. |

The city of Brighton and Hove, on the south coast of England, is served by the Portobello Marine wastewater treatment works, 5 miles (8km) east along the coast at Telscombe Cliffs. A number of smaller towns between the city and the treatment works also form part of the catchment, and Southern Water is the authority responsible for the entire area.
The catchment’s topography, sited on the edge of the South Downs, a range of hills close to England’s south coast, varies from around 600 feet (180m) OD to just 16 feet (5m) OD. A number of hydraulic models of the catchment have been built using InfoWorks CS and its predecessors, starting with simple representations and progressing to add layers of detail as the modeling software has improved. The models have been used to help implement flood alleviation schemes on a number of occasions.
However, it was realized that to solve the remaining flooding problems – mostly associated with overland flow or rural runoff |

16299 Building an Engineering |
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) of India, a leader in the global high tech engineering and construction markets, was about to engage in an arduous task of creating a Web-based supply-management system for the engineering/ manufacturing industry in India. Their goal was to automate the product development cycle and transform a static workflow process to a dynamic one using an Application Service Provider (ASP) concept. Constraints included, but were not limited to, security, bandwidth and a solution that was scalable enough to operate on multiple platforms with different databases. Web4’s technology was selected as part of an elite solution stack to bring TCS’s collaborative design process into fruition. eReview was used to enable users of the ASP to view, markup and collaborate on 2D and 3D CAD files in real-time over the Internet. With a strong, customized integration to IBM’s Lotus Notes and Oracle’s 8i database on a UNIX server, eReview proved to be a critical component in TCS’s engineering ASP. |
