Obama Nominates Verner to National Institute of Building Sciences Board

President Barack Obama has announced his intent to nominate Mary B. Verner to a key Administration post as a member of the National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Directors. Verner was one of 27 intended appointees announced by the White House on September 6.

"I am confident that these outstanding men and women will greatly serve the American people in their new roles and I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come," said President Obama.

If approved, Verner would become one of the 21-member Board of Directors that governs the Institute. The Board is composed of 15 members elected from either the public interest or industry categories and six members appointed by the President of the United States subject to the approval of the U.S. Senate.

The current mayor of Spokane, Washington, Verner was sworn in as the 43rd mayor of the city in November 2007. As the city’s chief executive officer, she is responsible for directing the activities of the city’s two thousand employees and managing a $600 million annual budget.

Prior to being elected mayor, Verner served on the Spokane City Council for four years, representing Council District 2, south of the Spokane River. She also was executive director of the Upper Columbia United Tribes, which serves the five federally recognized Indian tribes with reservations in Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho.

Mayor Verner has a broad range of experience in business, law, planning, policy development, program design and management. She has served on a wide variety of local boards and regional associations, and led her city’s programs to retrofit residential, commercial and public buildings to be energy-efficient. She has led on the issue of sustainability and making Spokane a hub for green and clean-tech businesses. The mayor’s Sustainability Task Force developed a comprehensive action plan for the city to address both climate change and energy security.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College, a master’s degree from Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and graduated with a Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University School of Law.
