NAVTEQ location content enables map display and geotagging of photosSINGAPORE, Feb. 2, 2012 — (PRNewswire) — NAVTEQ, the leading global provider of maps, traffic and location data enabling navigation, location-based services and mobile advertising around the world is supplying NAVTEQ® map and location content for Nikon's COOLPIX AW series of compact digital cameras, the first COOLPIX devices targeted for outdoor users. The AW100 is Nikon's first compact digital camera with waterproof, shock-proof and cold-resistant specifications. In addition, the device is also equipped with a number of new features including GPS support, an electronic compass and a map display.
Unique to the AW100 is the ability for users to view their exact location on the map display that comes pre-loaded within the devices. Both devices are equipped with built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) functionality that allows geo-tagged images to be pinpointed via Point of Interest (POI) data supplied with the NAVTEQ map. The NAVTEQ map today features millions of POIs in over 50 categories including restaurants, tourist attractions, shops, hotels and much more. Thanks to the millions of locations included within the NAVTEQ map, the AW100 will recognize your location and display it, either as longitude and latitude, or by place name. With the integration of maps and location content in the AW100, users can now geographically organize their photos effortlessly, allowing them to easily identify the exact location of where the photo was taken and when.
"With more and more consumers looking to integrate 'location' into their daily lives, our comprehensive global map coverage will now offer Nikon users an opportunity to combine their location and imaging experience." Said Kirk Mitchell, vice president, Asia Pacific, Sales.
NAVTEQ collects millions of miles of data annually in order to capture and validate the road network and a wide range of location content as it exists in the real world. Teams of geographic analysts positioned around the globe have the local knowledge needed to ensure superior accuracy of NAVTEQ maps covering 91 countries. Because the road network and content are constantly changing, local presence is critical to change detection and verification— both essential factors in delivering quality map data for these types of new and innovative consumer uses.
The AW100 is available globally (except China and South Korea).
