Teachers College, Columbia University is the oldest and largest graduate school of education in the United States and is perennially ranked among the nation’s best. About two years ago, the College’s administration reviewed the existing framework for facilities management and capital project management (CPM). The new CPM team is staffed by 3-4 project managers responsible for $5-7 million in construction and renovations. Laura O’Connell, Director of Capital Projects, said “even though these projects are smaller in budget, the effort is tremendous, as smaller projects have a tendency to be much more difficult to manage”. Going forward, the capital program is expected to expand to a 5-year, $50-60 million program.
