BSSC Webinar to Provide Overview of the 2015 NEHRP Provisions

May 27, 2015 -- Get ready to learn about what changes will appear in the most recent edition of the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program’s (NEHRP) NEHRP Recommended Provisions for New Buildings and Other Structures. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will soon be releasing the 2015 NEHRP Provisions for use. In preparation, the National Institute of Building Sciences Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) is holding a free webinar, “2015 NEHRP Provisions Overview,” on Wednesday, June 17, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm EDT, to help building professionals get ready.

Chair of the BSSC Provisions Update Committee (PUC) and Past Chair of the BSSC Board David Bonneville will present the one-hour webinar as an open-forum discussion. The BSSC PUC is responsible for developing the NEHRP Provisions through a five-year process sponsored by FEMA. The ninth edition of the national consensus publication, the 2015 Provisions serves as the state-of-the-art resource document for the next generation of recommended seismic code provisions for U.S. codes and standards. The recent Provisions updates are presented in the form of proposed changes to the ASCE 7-10 seismic provisions in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) standard, ASCE/SEI-7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures, and are accompanied by commentary.

Bonneville will provide an overview of the topics investigated in the 2015 Provisions cycle, such as: incorporation of P-695/P-795 methodologies for qualification of new systems and components; evaluation of performance objectives for seismic design and re-evaluation of seismic design categories; nonlinear response history analysis; diaphragm issues; foundations on liquefiable soil and other site-related issues; soil amplification factors; triggers for site-specific spectra, design mapping issues based on the U.S. Geological Survey’s 2014 national seismic hazard maps; base isolation and energy dissipation systems; soil-structure interaction; and modal response spectrum analysis.

A senior principal at Degenkolb Engineers in San Francisco, California, Bonneville is a member of the ASCE 7 Seismic Subcommittee and a fellow of the Structural Engineers Association of California. He is a recipient of the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations’ (NCSEA’s) James Delahay Award, given for outstanding contribution to building codes and standards, as well as NCSEA’s Robert Cornforth Award for exemplary service to the structural engineering profession.

Sign up now to attend the free “2015 NEHRP Provision Overview” webinar on June 17. Space is limited. Only the first 125 participants will be admitted, so don’t wait. Register today.
