2016-09-15 - From 14 September to 7 October the Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) presents the workshop “Altona Nord: Designs for Hamburg’s New Traffic Hub” at Campus Rainvilleterrasse in Hamburg. Three public lectures by renowned visiting professors such as Prof. Jörn Walter (Chief Planning Director of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ministry of Urban Development and Housing), Declan McCafferty (Grimshaw Architects) and Prof. Ir. Kees Christiaanse (KCAP Architects&Planners) complement the program, which is looking for holistic strategies for a main-line station of the 21st century. As guests at the side of the aac tutors, the experts Wolf Mangelsdorf and Jochen Rabe (Buro Happold) will be contributing their sound expertise.

The Academy for Architectural Culture (aac) is opening its doors from 14 September to 7 October for the workshop “Altona Nord: Designs for Hamburg’s new Traffic Hub”. Three public lectures by renowned visiting professors complement the program, which is looking – together with stakeholders such as Deutsche Bahn, the City of Hamburg and private investors – for convincing and realizable holistic strategies for the planned main-line station between the districts of Altona and Eimsbüttel. The private, non-profit organization, founded by the architects von Gerkan, Marg und Partner, devotes itself with research studies and courses to relevant architectural issues and the further training of young architects from different cultural backgrounds. In symposia, exhibitions, and publications, work results can be discussed with decision-makers and in public.

At the workshop under the direction of Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Dipl.-Ing. Meinhard von Gerkan, President of aac, and Dipl.-Ing. Architect Nikolaus Goetze, a partner at gmp and head of its Hamburg and Shanghai offices, the participants are invited to develop concrete designs within a dialog framework for the area at the current Diebsteich station and corresponding public buildings. Based on significant examples of station projects, the potential of such an inner city nucleus is to be examined in detail. As guests at the side of the aac tutors, the experts Wolf Mangelsdorf and Jochen Rabe from the renowned international Buro Happold will be contributing their sound expertise both in the fields of engineering and on questions of urban city development.

In three expert talks the public lecture series is dedicated to the context of urban train station projects of the 21st century. On 20 September at 19:00, Prof. Jörn Walter, Chief Planning Director of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, will speak on the topic “Making Stations – Altona between bunker mentality and urban significance”. Declan McCafferty will provide insights into his own practice on 28 September: With his contribution “Open Heart Surgery – Building Transit Hubs for the 21st Century” the expert on train station and transport projects and partner at Grimshaw Architects (London) will focus on aesthetics and strategy. Prof. Ir. Kees Christiaanse (KCAP Architects&Planners) will speak about cities as changing structures in his lecture “Open City” on 30 September.

The results of the workshops will be presented to the public on 7 October from 14:00 on the ground floor of the Campus Rainvilleterrasse as part of a final review and evaluation.
