Autodesk Homestyler Offers 3D Interactive Experience for 2011 Kitchen of the Year

By Susan Smith

A digital, interactive 3D experience of the House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year, outfitted with top-of-the-line products, is available through Autodesk Homestyler.

KitchenAid & Grothouse with butcher block

Autodesk Homestyler was used to create the Kitchen of the Year for House Beautiful but is not limited to showroom 2,500 square foot kitchens. House Beautiful unveiled the 2011 Kitchen of the Year, designed by Tyler Florence, renowned chef and TV star, at Rockefeller Plaza in New York on Monday, July 18. Homestyler can be used to design your own custom Kitchen of the Year featuring the same products that Tyler Florence used. According to Autodesk press materials, consumers can choose from hundreds of paint colors, cabinetry, countertops, appliances, and accessories. Just drag-and-drop to build your virtual 3D design.

Autodesk Homestyler offers a 3D digital, interactive experience of the massive indoor and outdoor kitchen, which is outfitted with top-of-the line products Visitors to the magazine’s Web site can click on any product in the digital kitchen to get more information. They can also choose their items including countertops, cabinets and appliances from top manufacturers including KitchenAid, Kohler, KraftMaid and Sherwin Williams to create their own digital Kitchen of the Year. The Kitchen of the Year event took place the week of July 18-22, but readers and Tyler Florence fans can return to the Web site to use Homestyler throughout the year. Readers can then save and share their customized
designs and generate a shopping list from their custom design to help make their dream kitchen a reality.

Video on tips and best practices in using Homestyler to tackle home design and remodeling projects.

Mary Hope McQuiston, director of product marketing and partnerships, Autodesk consumer group, answered some questions for GISWeekly.

GISWeekly: The Kitchen of the Year is the size of many people's homes - how would someone apply Autodesk Homestyler to perhaps the design of the interior of a home, or is it designed specifically for individual rooms?

With Homestyler, consumers can create designs for just about every room in their home, including the kitchen where they can access the same brands and products Tyler Florence selected for his House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year.

Homestyler can be used to design one or more rooms and even an entire home with basic landscaping. What we’ve also found, is that how living spaces are defined is up to the designer/homeowner and often people think about (and budget) one or two rooms at a time. The Kitchen of the Year, for example, is really a kitchen + dining area + seating area combined into a single space. Here are a few example designs that demonstrate a range of examples:

a. “Open” Space Concepts

b. Multi-Room (separated by interior walls)

c. Complete Home + Outdoor spaces

GISWeekly: How easy is Homestyler to use?

Mary Hope McQuiston: Our goal with Homestyler is to unlock the interior designer within everyone. With Homestyler non-professionals can layout rooms, decorate them with real world products, experiment with different options, visualize their space and save and share their design ideas with friends and family. Because Homestyler is free and web-based it’s really easy to get started, there isn’t software to download or maintain.

GISWeekly: If people are using their own handcrafted items such as cabinetry, how do they impose that into Homestyler as opposed to some cabinetry made by KraftMaid?

Mary Hope McQuiston:When using Homestyler, people have access to a catalog that contains more than 35,000 decorating and furnishing options from both branded and generic selections.

GISWeekly : Can Homestyler be used in conjunction with AutoCAD or other Autodesk design products?

Mary Hope McQuiston: Homestyler users can export their designs as a simple JPEG image file, or in the DWG or RVT formats used by professional designers, architects, and engineers.

GISWeekly:.Does Homestyler show up later on in the design process in building a home or office/structure?

Mary Hope McQuiston: Homestyler is being used at all points in the design process—from the early ideation stage when users are experimenting with different layouts and product options to the more detailed planning phase when they are making final layout and product purchase decisions.

GISWeekly: Do you think Homestyler is more specific to consumer home designers or does it have the capability to expand to larger structure design?

Mary Hope McQuiston:While Homestyler is targeted at the homeowner and professionals, we also have design enthusiasts and consumers using the tool for commercial purposes.

“For the past three years, many who visit us at the Kitchen of the Year in Rockefeller Center have said to us, ‘I really wish this were my kitchen,’ and now for the first time they’ll have the tools to make this a reality with Autodesk Homestyler,” said Kate Kelly Smith, senior vice president and publishing director, House Beautiful. “Tyler’s kitchen – well, two kitchens in fact, since this year we’ve built a second outdoor kitchen including a working wood oven from Belgard – will be a destination for design devotees, culinary enthusiasts, and visitors looking for new entertaining ideas. Partnering with Autodesk has enabled us to share Tyler’s vision with fans
online and extend the experience beyond New York City.”
