Town and Gardens: Pushing the envelope of creative landscape design in New York City

Mar 18, 2013 09:54 am | Julie McClure

As one of the premier landscape design/build companies servicing New York City, Town and Gardens, Ltd. has been beautifying residential, commercial, and public spaces since 1995. So naturally, we wanted to dig deeper and explore the firm’s design philosophy and how Vectorworks Landmark with Renderworks software has supported the process of making their visions, and those of their clients, a reality.

The two-level Royal York Condominium project spanned the roofs of two parking garages, totaled 14,000 square feet, and earned the firm a 2012 Green Roof for Healthy Cities award.

What we learned is that Town and Gardens offers clients the peace of mind that their projects will run smoothly, and it meets those expectations with a dedicated team involved each step of the way. Their hands-on, integrated approach to design, and the ability to remain engaged throughout installation and maintenance, is something the firm’s employees embrace.

We also learned about three projects created by the firm’s talented team of landscape architects and designers:

  • A narrow, L-shaped terrace for a penthouse apartment in Tribeca: Senior Designer Hanna Packer visually expanded the space with diagonal sandstone pavers, and she added built-in planters, an evergreen hedge, and a raised deck to create a relaxing environment that embraces views of the downtown skyline.
  • An East Village penthouse rooftop: For this project, Landscape Architect Liz Pulver worked with the building’s LEED certification framework and expanded an existing green roof by 30 percent.

Landscape Architect Liz Pulver softened the urban feeling of this 1,750-square-foot East Village rooftop penthouse space with the help of Vectorworks Landmark with Renderworks software.

  • An extensive green roof at the Royal York Condominium on the Upper East Side: Senior Designer Michael Franco enlisted a nautical theme to transform this 14,000-square-foot site. The design not only met the building’s program requirements for screening, waterproofing, visual interest from above, and a strong link between the site’s multiple buildings, but it also featured an LED light show that radiates from white to dark blue, much like waves pulsing through the space.

The Royal York Condominium features an LED light show that complements the design intent, which mapped the large space the way the ocean is mapped as two-dimensional, angular spaces.
