Quantapoint SceneModeler Mark VI Laser Scanner Ideal for Documenting Offshore Platforms

Latest Laser Scan Technology Innovation Enhances Quantapoint’s As-Built Laser Documentation Service for Offshore Platforms Through Rugged Design, Small Size and Improved Capabilities

PITTSBURGH, PA (August 12, 2005) — Quantapoint, a laser scanning pioneer and innovator, today announced that the upcoming SceneModeler Mark VI laser scanner includes many innovations that make it ideal for creating as-built documentation for offshore platforms. The Mark VI is based on the solid foundation of Quantapoint’s patented Mark V scanner, which is the most reliable, proven and frequently used laser scanner in the industry. It incorporates Quantapoint’s real-world experience over 700 projects and 60 offshore platforms to create an advanced laser scanner that is designed for optimal performance in complex and potentially harsh environments.

The Mark VI incorporates a closed internal system with minimal moving parts and a solid impact- and water-resistant outer shell. This rugged design helps to ensure that the Mark VI can withstand the potentially harsh environments on offshore platforms. The Mark VI is 50% smaller than the Mark V, measuring only 18.5” high x 7.5” wide x 21.7” long and weighing only 32 lbs. Just slightly larger than a typical airline “carry on” bag, the small size of the Mark VI makes it easier to laser scan in congested areas and transport when space is at a premium – such as on helicopters or boats mobilizing to offshore platforms. The Mark VI also offers many innovations that will significantly enhance Quantapoint’s as-built laser documentation service capabilities for offshore platforms. These include built-in level, temperature and humidity compensation to help ensure accurate results, a Class 1M laser rating that does not require laser safety goggles and a greater scanning range and speed over a hemispherical field-of-view with a battery-powered option to help ensure efficient and effective operations.

“Projects involving modifications to existing offshore platforms require highly accurate, complete, and easily transportable as-built condition documentation. Unfortunately, this is often unavailable or of questionable accuracy when relying on existing documentation such as piping isometrics, P&ID’s, general arrangement plans, and other 2D drawings,” says Eric Hoffman, CEO of Quantapoint. “Quantapoint provides an integrated laser scanning service that combines hardware, software and 2D drawing capabilities and does not require multiple data handoffs, purchasing costly hardware or time-consuming and potentially inaccurate remodeling. We provide the fastest, easiest and most cost-effective solution for creating detailed and dimensionally accurate as-built laser documentation for offshore platforms that can include photo-realistic 2D laser scans, interactive 3D laser models and verified 2D drawings such as P&IDs and piping isometrics. The Mark VI will be at the core of our service and will help ensure efficient laser scanning for offshore platforms by performing in harsh environments, eliminating transport and logistical issues and providing various other advantages.”

Added Ola Oshe, CEO of Ariosh Ltd., Quantapoint’s Nigerian-based partner, “Quantapoint and Ariosh have a successful track record of providing as-built laser documentation for West African facilities. We have more offshore experience than any other company, including wellheads, gas production units and entire production platforms, with clients such as Chevron and Mobil Producing Nigeria. We have consistently saved our clients millions of dollars and thousands of man-hours by reducing field trips by 75%, data collection time by 80%, field changes by 75% and hot work by 50%. The Mark VI will further increase the value that Quantapoint and Ariosh can provide to our West African clients.”
