Global power transmission manufacturer allows customers to view and download 3D models to ensure its gearing products fit into product designs
CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 6, 2002-- Boston Gear is using SolidWorks 3D PartStream.NET(SM) to enhance customer service by better presenting gears and related products used in material handling conveyors, processing machinery, and many other applications, SolidWorks announced today. 3D PartStream.NET spares Boston Gear's customers the time and expense of determining whether parts they find in paper-based catalogs fit exactly into their product designs. This Web service allows customers from around the world using Boston Gear's online catalog to view and download up to 21,000 accurate three-dimensional computer-aided design (3D CAD) models of Boston Gear products. Customers can then instantly plug those models into their own product designs to check compatibility. Doing so lets customers reduce product design costs and expedite their decision-making processes.
A division of the $525 million power transmission and pump manufacturer, Colfax Corporation, Boston Gear is a leading provider of power transmission products such as speed reducers, gears, motors, and its marquee 700 Series worm gear speed reducer products that help industrial machines operate more efficiently. With customers as far away as Central America, New Zealand, and Germany, Boston Gear is using its online product catalog, Bostspec2, developed by SolidWorks Partner, i-MARK, Inc., in conjunction with 3D PartStream.NET to streamline its customers' product searches. 3D PartStream.NET lets Boston Gear's customers save costs associated with creating a 3D model from scratch based on information in paper-based catalogs.
"Design engineers don't want to waste time trying to figure out whether a part fits exactly into their products based on 2D drawings in a paper catalog," said Cheryl Alley, electronic marketing manager at Boston Gear. "Our engineering customers have let us know that if we incorporate 3D solid models of our products on the Web site it would be much easier for them to view and download them into their designs to see if they've got the right product, then ultimately specify that product for purchase. 3D PartStream.NET provides our customers with much more realistic and interactive 3D views of our products than our previous software, as well as the ability to download product models for use in major CAD systems. This saves them time and money, and in manufacturing, that's everything."
Gearing up a powerful online catalog
Alley expects Boston Gear to ultimately offer about 25,000 solid models via Bostspec2 and 3D PartStream.NET. E-commerce solutions provider i-MARK built Bostspec2 by seamlessly integrating its SmartCAT eCatalog platform with 3D PartStream.NET. Together, the two technologies enable Boston Gear customers to quickly find the parts they're looking for and download it into their own product designs.
"Combining SmartCAT and 3D PartStream.NET means Boston Gear's customers don't have to waste their valuable time hunting for the right parts," said Del Merenda, president of i-MARK. "Manufacturing design engineers need to maximize their time. Bostspec2 gives them the tools they need to concentrate on their jobs, not product research."
"Boston Gear's customers are very loyal because its products are dependable and they meet exact specifications," said Bob Noftle, general manager of content solutions at SolidWorks Corporation. "The product location and download capabilities that SmartCAT and 3D PartStream.NET provide will help them do their jobs more efficiently, and further strengthen their commitment to Boston Gear and its products."
