REI Adds OpenSTAAD Feature to Structural Analysis & Design Software

YORBA LINDA, CA. October 24, 2001-- Research Engineers International, a division of netGuru, Inc. (NASDAQ: NGRU), today announced it has introduced OpenSTAAD, a feature that allows users to customize the widely-used STAAD.Pro structural engineering and analysis software to their exact needs.
        
The new OpenSTAAD is an open architecture tool providing customers with an application programming interface (API) to STAAD.Pros analysis and design engines as well as its graphical user interface (GUI) for personal customization.

The open architecture feature allows users the flexibility to create their own macros using a wide range of programming languages to link the software's results and to run STAAD.Pro engine and design functions in software applications like AutoCAD and Excel or Web-pages using ASP or ActiveX. OpenSTAAD enables users to integrate STAAD.Pro with legacy modeling, analysis and design applications as well as data mine and export the program's results in any manner.
        
Based on customer feedback and requests, REI developed OpenSTAAD to satisfy the growing demand of its users to add more customizable functionality, Das explained. Engineers are increasingly creating their own design applications because of the simplicity of some of the programming languages available in the market today.

"Every design firm has its own unique way of designing specific items like connections or preparing reports in a certain manner after the overall general analysis and design is completed," he said.

For example, the design of a wood screw or checking the existing capacity of a concrete column can be created using a simple Excel spreadsheet. The only outside information required is the maximum forces on the column. OpenSTAAD can be used to write a macro in Visual Basic, VBA or C++ inside of Excel that can seamlessly link the maximum section forces from STAAD.Pro for a certain member into the Excel spreadsheet.

OpenSTAAD highlights include:
- Open architecture providing users with an application programming interface to STAAD.Pro's analysis and design engines as well as graphical user interface
- Retrieve and link STAAD.Pro results inside of applications like Excel or databases like Access, SQL Server or Oracle 9i
- Create custom macros using simple languages like Visual Basic to link STAAD results and run STAAD.Pro engine and design functions in applications like Visio or Web-pages using ASP or ActiveX
- Integrate in-house applications with STAAD using a variety of programming languages such as C, C++, Java, FORTRAN or Delphi
- Create specific design and/or analysis applications using STAAD.Pro's technology.
