Search Tool from Centric Software

This week, Centric Software released Centric InSight 6.0, a specialized search tool for vertical markets such as construction, manufacturing and engineering. According to the press release, Centric has developed this unique search capability for the enterprise that provides broader and deeper searches than Google. Centric InSight 6.0 is an off the shelf product that can identify and classify all structured and unstructured product information stored behind the firewall in disparate, enterprise wide systems, while addressing the specific needs of engineering, manufacturing and facilities teams looking for specific technical content, drawings and construction project data. It enables teams to access documents, drawings bills of materials and other content very quickly.

The application features comparisons of results, the ability to manage results as needed, and recognition and adherence to established network and data security restrictions that protect document sources. Access is allowed based upon roles.

According to the press release, ”additional product intelligence built into Centric InSight 6.0 recognizes duplicate results, categorizes results against data types, and gives users options to navigate through unindexed document relationships. To manage results, users can select to share documents or organize them in a project folder for secure sharing with a cross-functional team over the Internet. Selected unmanaged files instantly become manageable with the automatic assignment of revision control identity and population of relevant data-management tags.“

Ray Kurland, president of TechiCom, a CAD industry analysis firm, stated that, ”demonstrating unparalleled power in discovery and management of results in comparison to other search engines, Centric InSight 6.0 will reduce cycle times and improve cost controls in many companies.“

Chris Groves, chief executive officer at Centric Software, spoke with AECWeekly about some of the features that are applicable to the AEC market.

AECWeekly: How long has Centric been in existence and what market does it serve primarily?

CG: Founded in 1998, Centric serves a variety of markets -- from AEC to aerospace, automotive, apparel, consumer goods and medical devices.

AW: What benefits does InSight bring to AEC and what are some of the customers you have in that area?

CG: Kiewett Construction, Best Buy, Princeton University are some of Centric's AEC customers. Some benefits brought to AEC include: Insight 6.0 enables rapid access to technical drawings and manuals to control the costs and schedules of construction projects, and reduce the timeline and costs of repairs for capital construction programs or facilities maintenance. Also, improving productivity is a big benefit, and users will be able to quickly conduct a search into project control tools and find a document that they need.

AW: What is the extent of InSight's "intelligence" - I'm assuming it can index specific parts of CAD drawings and understand the relationships between them?

CG: Yes, absolutely. Google does not understand or index the content of a title block in a CAD drawing, nor can it discover the relationships in the results, much less categorize the results.

AW: How does the product integrate information from various CAD, PLM and PDM systems?

CG: This is like Google in searching and indexing files, conducting a search and retrieving the information you want. See the link for the demo of Centric InSight.

AW: What kinds of structured and unstructured data does the AEC industry want to be able to use in their work?

CG: Centric actually did a survey and found that the project control tool used most often are spreadsheets. Also Word documents and email messages.
