How Drawings Should Look

By Susan Smith

AECCADCON, Inc., a reseller for both Bentley and Autodesk products, has come up with a nifty productivity toolset for MicroStation called LandscapeDesign Version 1. LandscapeDesign allows the landscape professional to produce professional presentation drawings from directly within MicroStation.

LandscapeDesign sets out to automate MicroStation tools geared for rendering output. There are no hand rendered processes and materials capabilities within MicroStation, although they could be created from scratch in MicroStation, which would be quite time consuming, according to Jason Kornaker, Director of Technical Services for AECCADCON.

This is a good tool for those who need presentation graphics and rendering capabilities for presentations to zoning and planning committees but have had no simple way to get the hand rendered look that they wanted.

With LandscapeDesign, the rendered plan drawings produced by the landscape designer look as though they've been hand colored. The designer doesn't have to export their project to a third party application for final rendering. Changes made in the MicroStation file are automatically updated in the final presentation.

Designers can also apply artistic rendering materials from organized palettes, at any time during the design process. This cuts down on the need to use large directories of cells and materials. The tool palette contains planting, sitework and labeling tools, and programming to set rendering hierarchy based upon vegetation canopies so that objects don't appear on top of one another.

The product is said to be easy to learn for those familiar with MicroStation. It loads inside MicroStation and has a familiar interface. It is basically independent of all the Bentley vertical applications such as GEOPAK, TriForma, etc.

When asked if a similar product would be in the works for AutoCAD users, Kornaker said they had looked into it, but that the rendering engine for AutoCAD was “not where it needs to be right now.” They will revisit this some time in the near future.

Kornaker said that they are looking at including database intelligence, section generation and an architectural module for plan and interior rendering in Version 2.

Bentley Systems, Incorporated announced that it has formed a partnership with RAM International, a leading provider of structural design software, to distribute RAM's solutions for structural engineers and designers.

"Our partnership with RAM International," said Brad Workman, vice president Bentley Building, "will bring even more comprehensive solutions to our structural engineering and designer users - solutions that will enable them to produce better designs, faster. Bentley's comprehensive building design applications and RAM's market-leading structural products make this an obvious fit. We believe this combination will deliver fully integrated BIM solutions for the structural design market."

GiveMePower Corporation, a provider of next-generation computer-aided design (CAD), digital blueprint management and graphics development software for Windows(R) mobile, wireless, laptop and desktop computing, has been accepted into HP's Developer and Solutions Partner Program (DSPP).

1ST Pricing(TM), a Southern California-based technology company providing practical solutions to the building industry, has announced that Graphisoft North America will adopt the 1ST Pricing technology to provide real-time pricing for specified building materials in a design. The 1ST Pricing-Graphisoft add-on technology will be previewed at AIA 2005 this week in Las Vegas -- a national trade show for members of the American Institute for Architects.

Nemetschek North America, a subsidiary of holding company
Nemetschek AG of Germany, announced at the National AIA Conference that company founder, Richard Diehl, CEO, will be stepping down from that position after nearly 20 years. Autodesk, Inc. in response to customer demand, announced the expansion of its Autodesk Certified Expert Program to include Autodesk(R) Architectural Desktop, the market-leading AutoCAD(R)-based design and documentation productivity solution for architects. Architectural Desktop 2006 has been updated with new features to help architects and designers create, manage and share design information more effectively, which contributes to increased profitability, reduced risk and greater efficiency in building design, construction and management.

Bentley Systems, Incorporated introduced the Bentley Institute Star Program, which recognizes and tracks the learning achievements of Bentley users.

The program includes the new online transcripts from the Bentley Institute. "By tracking transcripts online," says Chris Klein, principal of industry analyst firm ZweigWhite, "individuals measure their ongoing career development and communicate their value to company management. At the same time, managers can instantly monitor and assess professional development across the organization to determine whether its training investments are paying off."

New Products

Place: Helsinki, Finland
Four periods of outstanding architectural achievement left their imprint on Helsinki since it was founded on the rocky Baltic shores, only two centuries ago, as the capital of Finland — then a province of the Russian Empire.

The first centers on the work of C.L. Engel, a classmate of Schinkel in Berlin, who was sent to Helsinki in the early 19th century from St. Petersburg to head the design and construction of major new buildings — churches, the university, hospitals and armories. His masterwork is the Lutheran Cathedral, set on granite rocks overlooking the old town core. Its design uniquely incorporates Byzantine massing and richness, Czarist ceremonial pomp, and Nordic Palladianism.
