McLaren Software's David Parry quoted senior editor of Byte Magazine (Nov. 1991) in saying: “If modern computing was born with the first electronic computer, then incompatibility was born with the second.”
McLaren uses SOA for applications. With web services, integrations occur at the business process level, according to Parry. ISO 15926 will help with information exchange by adding structure to unstructured information.
Ray Simonson of Software Innovation said that openness is not Java or Open Source, it's a bout architecture and standards. SOA allows distribution using web service. Their flagship product, CoreWorx, has just been rewritten in .NET as SOA.
Mitch Vaughn of UGS said their company is the “largest least known software company in the industry.” It is over two years old and has $1.2 billion in software sales in the PLM space. They integrate through a single system of record, that being TeamCenter. The company was formed through acquisition and has solved its integration needs through TeamCenter.
Alain Hubrecht of the very innovative VRcontext noted current interoperability limitations:
- Engineering point of view:
- Owner operator point of view:
- There are many kinds of data sets that need support:
Although John Voeller did an excellent job of outlining a number of exciting new technologies that are on the way, some promising emerging technologies were featured in an Emerging Technologies pavilion at daratechPLANT. These included Actenum Corporation, Artesys International, Common Point, Inc., ecom instruments, FALCONEER Technologies LLC, iWareTM, Paulin Research Group, Process Systems Enterprise.
In addition to the exhibit floor, vendors at daratechPLANT hold demonstrations of products in Salons, small rooms in the balcony above the hotel lobby. Autodesk, although not yet a player in the plant and process area, had a salon at the conference. They were there to find out from customers what they would like to see from Autodesk in this space. I hope to have more insight on this at a later date, and also will detail the goings on in the salons in more detail next week.
