China Update

Vice President, Bentley Asia, Jean Baptiste Monnier, said that Bentley has new territory executives in China now.

There are 20,000 design institutes, or architectural/engineering firms, in China, representing a huge market. There is a great demand for ProjectWise, as these firms produce an incredible volume of design files, many of which they lose. “Everything's digital because most of what they use for design is pirated AutoCAD,” explained Monnier.

Many Chinese vendors have developed their own internal document management systems, so interoperability and standards are a huge problem. The government is issuing standards and exchange formats, but there is still a lot of rubber stamping going on.

What software will China pay for? PowerDraft, which they can buy online for US$20 (Chinese price), ProjectWise and 3D for plant design, and geospatial.

Customers are in all the verticals, with particular emphasis on plant. Utilities include “anything that touches water,” and telcom is very big.
