One of the big questions these days is how does a BIM software interoperate with various other softwares such as those providing lighting or electrical analysis?
The Bentley applications have some direct connections to the analysis applications. For example, the electrical application ties into circuit analysis software, The mechanical application ties into airflow, structural ties into the loads, etc. Architectural uses mostly IFCs to make connections.
Bentley can do direct integration with another company’s software such in the case of lighting analysis. Sometimes, however, those solutions don’t scale well. “Rather than write thousands of different translators, what everyone is centering on is that universal translator –the interoperable standard IFCs which are really picking up steam in a good way,” said Roberts. The IFCs are good as long as the user knows that what he/she is using works well with IFCs.
Roberts said that IFCs are great for exchanging information. Some products such as Bentley Structural and RAM Structural, integrate back and forth dynamically like a shared environment. “You can’t do that with an IFC exchange because you’re going out to a snapshot and you’re coming back to a snapshot so you can’t get a high degree of live interaction. It’s still really good, and the integration is going to be functionally better than interoperability,” Roberts pointed out. “Interoperability is far more scalable and a great way to make sure that you can connect anything. We’re pursuing both modes.”
GenerativeComponents and BIM
GC now works well with Bentley BIM solutions as it is parametric and allows you to tweak your parameters to influence your result. An example used at the conference was GC driving an office building, with floor to floor height and the curve of a window bay and the slope of a façade, which were all parameters being changed in GC. The building itself had been created in Bentley Structural for the steel beams, Bentley Architecture for walls and curtain walls. When you change the floor to floor height in GC, all the columns got longer but more importantly, they became longer as BIM columns so that tied into the analysis, the loads and the amount of steel you need to
buy all the information a BIM tracks and manages.
Deltek, a leading provider of enterprise applications software for project-focused organizations, announced that it has acquired
WST Pacific (WSTP), its longtime earned value management (EVM) partner, to add additional EVM skilled development, services and support resources.
Meridian Systems, provider of enterprise project management software for optimizing capital projects, programs and facilities, announced a newly expanded relationship with
Byrne Software Technologies, Inc., as its latest value-added reseller.
Nemetschek Group, and
Adobe Systems Inc. will be working together more closely in the future. The two companies are thus consolidating their roles as technology leaders with the introduction of PDF as the format of the future for the exchange of data in the building industry. The aim of the strategic alliance is to optimize processes of architects and engineers. To do this, Nemetschek will integrate the PDF generation function on the basis of the original Adobe PDF Libraries with its CAD software Allplan.
ModernTech is pleased to announce their acceptance as the first reseller partner for
Altiva Software. Altiva’s CADconform software is designed to enforce compliance to Computer Aided Design (CAD) standards in an engineering environment.
ModernTech has provided leading-edge technology solutions to the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) markets since 1988. With a primary focus on design and engineering software from Bentley Systems, CADconform will complement ModernTech’s existing product and service offerings enabling engineering firms to reduce design time and increase profits.
Bayer Technology Services GmbH (BTS) Germany has signed a Global Alliance Agreement (GAA) with Intergraph Corp. to use Intergraph's design and operations software suite for its chemical and pharmaceutical plants worldwide.
BTS offers fully-integrated solutions along the life cycle of chemical and pharmaceutical plants from development through engineering and construction to process optimization for existing plants. Intergraph's SmartPlant Enterprise suite provides a variety of interoperable, modular applications to engineer, procure, construct, operate and maintain plants from design to decommissioning.
Deltek, a provider of enterprise applications software for project-focused organizations has become a major sponsor of Architects for Aid (A4A), a charity founded by a group of leading UK architects and supported by the entire AEC industry. Deltek, whose applications are used by some of the main players in the UK AEC industry, has given £25,000 towards A4A’s work. In particular, Deltek is the exclusive sponsor of a project involving the re-building of a residential children’s counseling unit in Lesotho, a small country where HIV/AIDS and high unemployment mean that 59% of the population lives below the poverty line.
NavisWorks Ltd., developers of JetStream, the leading collaborative 3D design review software, announced the release of their latest version 5.4. Enhancements include support for Autodesk 2008 products and the latest releases from other important industry leaders.
