Getting power from a windfarm generation operation to the location where power can be consumed is not being accomplished because there is not the grid in place to make this happen. The aging infrastructure is not designed to support this and to support existing customers. Smart Grid demands are getting greater, and creation and distribution of power are on the minds of all utilities companies.

Sharkey talked about model based design for electric utility distribution networks. which makes it possible to “drive consistency and productivity with model based design.” The goal of this product is to analyze these designs, optimize them and enhance reliability, and deliver more consistent and coordinated design models automatically.

AutoCAD Utility Design for Electrical Utility Distribution addresses three main areas: design, analysis and automated processes.

Design –

Smart grids require smart information and because you’re working with true model based design and that 3D connectivity and level of intelligence can be incorporated at the drafting phase.

One of biggest benefits of AUD would be the ability to set up templates. An experienced designer can set up a number of templates for use by the entire team, complete with coordinate system information and document properties.

You can pull GIS information into your template to better inform your design, you can use building and parcel data from AutoCAD 3D.

Analysis –

Not only are standards are evolving far more rapidly than ever before, the assumptions used for calculations in analysis are evolving too and the components that make up the grid are changing. AUD contains a comprehensive set of configurable engineering analysis tools, such as automatic guiding, voltage drop calculation, clearance checking and more. Analysis for voltage drop can run automatically.

Automated processes –

Automated processes can help you improve you design to construction time even more. The ability to integrate with work management systems allows you to generate work orders, and the ability to integrate with materials and billing systems means you can generate reports of materials and labor costs estimates and because it is built on AutoCAD Map 3D 2012. The industry model used is exactly the same, and you can deliver an intelligent model that has all the attributes, connectivity, and containment information that you need to better manage those assets.

Announcements

The National Institute of Building Sciences buildingSMART alliance, International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) are working to develop a research framework for building information modeling (BIM). The three organizations will host a BIM Research Framework Advisory Stakeholder Meeting on Monday, September 19, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., at the Providence Convention Center in Providence, R.I., to be held in conjunction with the Labs21/I2SL 2011 Annual Conference.

Deltek has released a new research report that predicts demand for architecture and engineering (A/E) services by the U.S. government will increase to $9.5 billion in 2016 from $8.1 billion in 2011, at a compounded annual growth rate of 3.2%.

Deltek’s “
Federal Architecture & Engineering Market Outlook, 2011-2016” report shows that while overall agency budgets are under tremendous pressure, policy initiatives that drive cost
savings will create opportunities specifically for architecture and engineering firms, and provide modest federal market growth over the next five years.

ECRI Institute, an independent nonprofit that researches the best approaches to improving patient care, announces its new designation as an
American Institute of Architects (AIA/CES) approved provider of continuing education services for the healthcare design world. Two courses have been developed already including, "Building a Hybrid Operating Room," a program being offered August 31, 2011, at the award-winning architecture firm, Perkins+Will, in their New York City offices.

ZWSOFT, announced that it donated 76 licenses of ZW3D 2011 Standard to
Tokyo University of Science. The grant makes it possible for TUS to train its students in mechanical CAD, and to do teaching research with the latest version of ZW3D.

The
American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), proudly recognizes and celebrates excellence in architecture announcing the recipients of the Academy for Emerging Professionals (AEP) Awards. The Emerging Professionals are the segment of the AIACC membership that establishes connections, and advocates for architecture school graduates, aspiring and recently-licensed architects, as well as individuals that mentor this important group. As a large and growing constituency of the AIACC, the Academy for Emerging Professionals aspires to unite and disseminate information regarding the practice of architecture, firm culture, mentoring, and stimulate ongoing local,
state and national discussions. This is the highest honor given to California Emerging Professionals, recognizing individuals and organizations for their leadership and contributions to the architectural profession. The esteemed Awards Jury was comprised of 11 elected Emerging Professional leaders.

The AEP Awards honor those that have demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to Emerging Professionals, the AIACC, and the architectural profession. This year, four AEP Awards were bestowed on the following recipients:
  • Firm Mentorship Award - Darden Architects, Inc.

This award is given to an AIACC firm that has made an extraordinary effort to mentor Emerging Professionals in their firm through the implementation of specific programs. The jury stated, "Darden Architects, Inc. have set a standard of mentorship that stands out locally, statewide and nationally."

  • Chapter Award - AIA San Joaquin

This award is given to an AIA chapter for the development of superb programming and fostering the highest qualities of leadership within the Emerging Professional membership. The jury stated, "This chapter has demonstrated their belief that the future of the profession rests in the Emerging Professionals and they are committed to helping this group reach their personal and professional goals."

  • Associates Award - Julie Jaurique-Chipps, Associate AIA

This award is given to an Associate AIA member who best exemplifies the highest qualities of leadership and has demonstrated unparalleled commitment to his/her chapter or region's membership, in the community, professional organizations, and in the design and construction industries. The jury stated, "Julie exemplifies the values of the AEP and the profession, and has built a robust associates program in her chapter."

  • Young Architect Award - Kevin deFreitas, AIA

This award is given to a young architect who has shown exceptional leadership and made significant contributions to the profession in an early stage of his/her architectural career. The jury stated, "Kevin was inspired to design and develop urban in-fill projects and began self developing projects that realized more holistic solutions integrating sustainable strategies."

    New Products

CADLearning for Autodesk Revit Architecture 2012 offers lessons and demonstrations that cover from beginner to advanced BIM features and functions, including modeling system family elements, placing components, creating views and sheets, controlling the appearance of views, adding dimensions and constraints, creating reports and schedules, and using collaboration tools to work with others.
