Planning and Scheduling Software for Construction

by Susan Smith

In August, Primavera announced
two versions of Primavera Contractor planning and scheduling solution for the construction industry. The standard version simplifies schedules for projects with up to 750 activities, while the deluxe version handles scheduling for more complex projects with up to 2,000 activities. Nicole Styer, Product Manager, Primavera Systems, Inc. spoke with AECWeekly about the release.

AECWeekly: Is this a major release of Primavera Contractor?

Nicole Styer: Yes, this is a major product release for us. Primavera is constantly finding new ways to meet the needs of the construction industry. Primavera Contractor simplifies scheduling for contractors and improves their overall project management process – helping them to be more successful in their businesses and deliver their projects on-time and on-budget while getting paid faster.

AW: Providers of similar software solutions have said that their biggest competitors in this space are email, the fax machine and Microsoft Excel. Would you agree with this and why or why not?

NS: We agree that the products listed in this question are competitors in this space. Typically, most people use these items on a daily basis. What's great about Contractor, is that we can take the data from these items and directly import that information into our product.

AW: When you say the Deluxe version handles scheduling more complex projects up to 2,000 activities, are these activities spread across the features you list, such as Project Kickstart Wizard, industry reports, progress spotlight, etc?

NS: Both versions of Primavera Contractor enable users take advantage of all of the software's unique capabilities, including Project Kickstart Wizard, Progress Spotlight, industry reports, forms and graphics, and other easy-to-use features.

AW: What do you believe sets Primavera Contractor apart from the competition?

NS: Primavera Contractor is designed specifically for the construction field by Primavera. Primavera Contractor is an intuitive and easy-to-use project planning and scheduling software that provides contractors and subcontractors with a step-by-step guide to creating an accurate project schedule. Real-life construction project samples (residential, hospital, highway, building, etc.) are included and customized templates make it easy to build a schedule faster. Contractor also makes submitting progress reports and processing change orders much easier. Enhanced industry reports, forms and graphics make generating reports faster. Additional features allow contractors to manage data better,
go back to a previous step, transfer information with simple drag-and-drop capability, and import/export data from other sources.

AW: Who are the customers for each of the two different versions of the products?

NS: Contractor is used most often by contractors and subcontractors. They can use either version of the product depending on the size of their projects.

AW: How many users does this product have so far?

NS: Thousands of people are using Primavera Contractor.

AW: Do you have beta users testing the products and what have been their comments on the new releases so far?

Yes, A&E Construction has beta tested the product and provided us with the following quote to share: “Primavera Contractor's Kickstart Wizard feature showed us step-by-step how to build our project schedule and make updates quickly – without extra paperwork,” said Fred Zeitter, Senior Project Manager, A&E Construction, Inc. “That lets us focus on what we’re here to do – deliver a finished building for our client.”
