It is good to see a construction organisation using electronic document sharing, and no doubt the system from "Submittal Exchange" works well, however their is a distinct lack of standards in this area which needs addressing urgently. The number of systems such as that from Submittal Exchange grows every day, all with different methods of operation, system structures, formats, etc. Large contractors and professional practices can adopt one such solution and make significant operational and overhead savings as a result. This however is not the case for the poor subcontractor or specialist supplier who has to deal with a growing number of such systems with only marginal benefits. Each time a new one materialises they have to go through a new learning curve - or not get the business! Please can the US construction software industry get together and define system and document interchange standards in this area. In the UK an organisation called NCCTP has been established tyo address this issue We must learn from the lessons of history - I remember when the organisation I worked for had to deal with 28 (yes 28) different word processing formats. At least in word processing MS Word has become the dominant format and anyway we can always fall back on RTF! Praise for increasing the use of electronic document exchange in construction, but was yet another system really necessary ? It brings to mind Bowmar's First Law - "All problems are caused by solutions".
