Article source: Díaz y Díaz Arquitectos The project builds on an existing building, with the need to extend the useful space and improve access from the promenade and the platform that surrounds it. Another premise of this project is to design a building that will become a landmark of the promenade of Portonovo, creating a singular and unique reference. The platform on which the building sits is the end of the breakwater of Portonovo´s marina. It has an irregular shape in plan with a maximum length of 36.00m and a width of 16 m.  Image Courtesy © Mark Ritchie The building is surrounded by the sea on its north, east and south side. The access to the building from the promenade is redone with different formats of new granite pieces and large wooden IP decks. The need of expanding and improving facilities of the Nautical Sports Services of the port, will take the demolition of part of the existing building and relocation of the different uses inside, creating an extension of the building.  Image Courtesy © Mark Ritchie The principal idea consists in wrapping the original building with a new facade of black-colored phenolic panels. Part of the northern facade of phenolic panel is drilled to hide windows and doors, maintaining ventilation and lighting, and giving the building a unique look. An additional building is attached along its southern front with an independent structure, offering new spaces for the users. The height above grade will be matched to the height of the current roof to create a unique volume.  Image Courtesy © Mark Ritchie The resulting volumes are developed in the east-west longitudinal axis allowing two large facades that open onto the beach Portonovo (north) and to the port (south). The rhythm marked on the new volume reflects the idea of the cargo containers. The ground floor contains the crew and captain services, clothing, nautical equipment store, reception and café with the possibility of independent access.  Image Courtesy © Díaz y Díaz Arquitectos The first floor contains a restaurant, kitchen, storeroom, toilet and a private lounge with a reading room that can be used us a meeting room. There is also an open terrace to the south, covered with a wooden structure that allows the opening of the facade facing to the port. Both floors are connected by the existing stairway and a new elevator. Access and evacuation of nautical sports services is from the west through the breakwater which is paved for pedestrians. It allows vehicles to approach the building for supply and emergencies.
