Bob Mayer, COO, of IMSI/Design talked about the latest release of TurboSite, TurboSite v1.2, a mobile app that does field documentation. The rest of the TurboViewer series of apps runs on Android. Their other mobile apps will run on other tablet platforms relatively soon, too (they’re being worked on). “Of the new features, we believe that the Skype and FaceTime video chat, Materials support, and the new AutoShape functionality are going to be the most popular enhancements,” said Mayer. “These improvements address very different areas – collaboration, visualization and annotations.” What makes it different from other field documentation products? Mayer says there is no other field documentation product that does what TurboSite does… “we believe we’ve created a new market category here… made possible because of the unique capabilities of smart devices (portable, long battery life, GPS, video, audio, photos, chat, accelerometers, compass, etc.)… in other words, the stuff we’re doing can’t be done on a desktop PC.” Before smart devices (and TurboSite) came along, field documentation and site evaluation was a horribly manual, time-consuming, and really a disjointed process., said Mayer. Most architects and engineers are familiar with the old process of documenting a building with a digital camera and making notes on paper or a laptop, and referring to blueprints. “With TurboSite all your plans are on your smart device. GPS knows where you’re at in a building,” says Mayer. “When you find a problem, simple take a picture or video or notes at your exact location on your digital plans, there is no guess work required. Hit save… and you’re either off to the next spot… or instantly email or print your findings to your entire design and construction team.” “We’re the first software package to tackle this. We estimate we save up to 80-90% of the actual time it takes to document field work… and 100% of the pain.” This app was built by a practicing architect who managed AutoCAD products at Autodesk.
