Bentley’s ProjectWise Essentials Brings Cloud-Based Design Integration to the Mid-Tier

May 7th, 2015 by Susan Smith

Bentley Systems’ ProjectWise Essentials is an innovative, cloud-based, design integration environment designed for the mid-tier AEC market. Bentley’s popular ProjectWise design collaboration and work sharing solution has been addressing the needs of large AEC organizations for over 20 years.

According to Bentley’s Nicole Stephano, senior marketing manager, Project Delivery, ProjectWise Essentials “software at your service” provides immediate access to key advantages of ProjectWise, that meets business needs and provides a managed environment that allows them to focus on global work sharing.

“Users can have immediate access to design files and collaborate effectively without the IT burden of other solutions in the marketplace,” said Stephano.

Bentley has worked closely with large organizations to make sure the implementation meets their needs. They support industry standard workflows that allow organizations to take advantage of built-in workflows almost immediately, that are a part of the ProjectWise Essential environment for them.

“Our goal to provide the access to the tools within ProjectWise and allow users to take advantage of those Best Practices Workflows almost instantaneously, that we’ve developed over many years,” said Stephano.

The ability to overcome the “big file problem,” working across different offices in different locations, which includes difficulty with ftp sites, is key, as ProjectWise allows you to transfer files in a LAN environment. In a LAN environment, you can go to a drive on your network and have very quick access to those files. In an ftp site you can download those files and ProjectWise provides capabilities to streamline and remove that time burden from the user who needs to access the file to download the information. This is especially important with very large file transfers.

“We have a capability called Delta File Transfer which enables quick changes to the user regardless of the device,” said Stephano. “It can also work in a mobile environment as well as access those files without the burden of waiting for those files. We can also ensure the integrity of that file. That means the changes to a file as it’s updated, the workflow and state that it is managed in ProjectWise is automatically viewed and accessible by the user. It removes that risk from the user and allows them to get the data they need, knowing that they have the latest file. All too often especially in collaborative environments, users can often can be accidentally working on same file.”

Before now, ProjectWise hasn’t been accessible to the mid-tier organizations but ProjectWise Essentials makes it affordable. “It really is ProjectWise for everyone,” said Stephano. “ It allows organizations of any size to be able to take advantage of ProjectWise, because it eliminates the necessity of system or server administration.”

According to company materials, the ProjectWise Essentials environment makes it possible for geographically dispersed teams to leverage industry standards and best practices required to speed secure information sharing and the exchange and delivery of project drawings, models, documentation, and complex reference files – in support of applications commonly used in AEC projects, including Revit and AutoCAD Civil 3D. ProjectWise Essentials also improves the fidelity and reliability of this information – through, for example, the provisioning of provenance and audit trails – reducing redesigns and the risk of errors.

User organizations further benefit from the ability to:

  • take advantage of the industry standards and best practices required to support today’s BIM workflows across distributed teams;
  • control access to BIM models, support version control, and manage change in associated models – contributing to better cost control and construction quality;
  • automate the management of complex relationships among documents and components;
  • share large work-in-progress datasets across offices in real time and instantly communicate design changes made by others without the need to resend large files;
  • control access to documents; and
  • search easily at both the file and component levels.
