Call for Participants: February Topics – Collaboration and Reality Capture

January 26th, 2016 by Susan Smith

Two topics coming up for February timeframe on AECCafe Voice:

Collaboration platforms and the Cloud

Reality Capture

Collaboration platforms and the Cloud –

1merchantsquare2Buildings are now generating vast amounts of data, cities need to be sustainable, flexible and producers of resources. AEC professionals must also have their eye on environmental impact and diminishing greenhouse gas emissions in design and construction as well as operations. As owner/operators get more involved in the entire lifecycle of the project, there is a greater need for convergence and collaboration of AEC teams.

How do we meet the needs of these challenging requirements?

Reality Capture –

Reality capture takes on numerous identities in the modern world. How accurate do we need to have the data in the environment? There’s also time of collection, cost of equipment. Where laser scanners cost significantly more, it takes more time to collect 3D laser scanning data, and it’s more complex as far as a specialty skill to know how to do it. Versus UAV photogrammetry, where it is easier to fly, process the data, cheaper, but we lose accuracies. Where the laser scanning is typically around 3 millimeters of accuracy range, UAVs will be up there with mobile lidar where those accuracy ranges are going to be within an inch.

Other ways of collecting and managing data include gathering real time information from photos with simple cameras and smartphones. Data can be viewed and interacted with via headsets, so that stakeholders can get a really interactive idea of what a building and the surrounds will look like once built.

What are your organizations doing in the world of Collaboration and the Cloud or Reality Capture, or both? What are the pros and cons of these exciting new directions? Please plan to have your replies in to me at susan.smith@ibsystems.com no later than February 10th. You may also reply to this blog.
