Vectorworks 2017 Sports Innovative New Features for Collaboration, Immersive Environments and Much More

September 21st, 2016 by Susan Smith

In a recent interview with Dr. Biplap Sarkar, CEO of Vectorworks, we discussed the latest features of Vectorworks 2017, which was released September 14th.

Resource Manager

While making significant enhancements in areas such as import and export, rendering, and immersive environments, Vectorworks 2017 takes a departure from the typical by adding new apps for railing and fencing, irrigation tools (one of the top five features), Resource Manager search engine, and drainage capability added to flat roof design, BIM supporting IFC4 VCF, among other important features.

“We now import Revit files, and are probably the first to introduce ODA for DWG libraries,” said Sarkar. Content from different manufacturers can now also be added through selection from the Resource Manager.

Other architectural features include the ability to move slabs separately from walls or to be open or partially covered by walls.

“There is no change to the interface,” said Sarkar. “The shell is what people see, the core is the center. We have separated them so that we can change the core without disrupting the shell.”

A look at the features of Vectorworks 2017:

  • Vectorworks’ Resource Manager equips the user with the ability to create, find, edit and apply resources to designs with a powerful search mechanism. Included are the ability to use online subscription libraries, workgroup libraries, and user libraries accessed directly from Vectorworks parametric tools. BIMObject from Sweden offers free, manufacturer specific BIM objects from leading BIM providers that are made available through the Resource Manager.
  • Vectorworks’ Landmark offers an irrigation system design feature for house, golf courses, etc., which meets with the government’s recent focus on efficiency and regulations for the irrigation design market. This system creates a network where users can select manufacturing data and will give velocity, water pressures, using CFD equations, making calculations related to physical features and resource availability.
Webview and Virtual Reality

  • A purpose-built suite of tools in Vectorworks 2017 allow users to create a building information model for collaboration and documentation with new support for BIM workflows with IFC4 compatibility, direct Revit import, and project sharing capabilities, make it possible to work with the entire project team on a single file at the same time.
  • An immersive WebView and Virtual Reality features allow users to share designs with clients and collaborators, and view models on any device in 3D.
  • Renderworks, built on award-winning Cinema 4D render engine, provides tools to visualize work during the design process and generate accurate, accessible illustrations.
  • Cloud Services – These services are now made available to all users and as a result, designs can be shared with others who are not users. Previously this feature was restricted to subscribers only. The re-engineered Vectorworks Graphics Module (VGM) provides smoother navigation and multi-threaded drawing for complex scenes.

Keeping current with Vectorworks software allows you to maximize your efficiency and take advantage of cutting-edge technology. “Our subscription program, Vectorworks Service Select, is the most cost-effective way to ensure that you will always have access to the most current version of our software,” said Sarkar. “We have updated our upgrade policy to reflect the continued growth of our subscription program and the advancements of our software.

As of September 14, 2016, Vectorworks, Inc. discontinued the current upgrade options that were available for licenses four or more versions behind the current version. Users who are designing with one of these older versions will only be able to transition to the current version by purchasing a new license. For example, when Vectorworks 2017 is released this fall, users who are designing with Vectorworks 2013 will only be able to transition to the current version by purchasing a new license. This policy change applies across all product lines.

Vectorworks Service Select members will continue to receive access to the latest version of their software as part of their subscription benefits.
