AECCafe Voice’s Reality Capture Questionnaire

February 28th, 2018 by Susan Smith

Reality Capture has taken the AEC world by storm in recent years with its ability to capture existing conditions and create 3D models out of photographs or laser scans, without seams. Technologies used include 3D laser scanning, mobile and aerial LiDAR, and photogrammetry. This resulting point data is reconstructed into a 3D model. While accurate, LiDAR only captures 3D data leaving color out. Photogrammetry is another method by which Reality Capture is achieved. This type of Reality Capture uses photographs to reconstruct a 3D image.

An image in Bentley’s ContextCapture photo planning that shows operation (gray),
target (yellow), and forbidden (red) zones.

Some of the services offered around Reality Capture may include georeferencing, image registration, automatic calibration, calculating a polygon mesh, coloring, texture, parallel projections, DSM, simplification, scaling, filtration, coordinate system conversion, smoothing, measurement, inspection, and methods of imports and exports. Both camera images and laser scans can be combined. It’s also possible to collect 3D scan data using smartphone technologies.

Not only does reality capture offer a better way to produce designs or inspect existing structures, but it also provides new business opportunities.

The following are some questions for your consideration. Materials will be considered for a feature story appearing in this blog.

  1. What are your products for Reality Capture and their features?
  2. What are some of the best applications of this technology?
  3. Some technologies allow you to take photos with a smartphone and create 3D models out of the resulting photos? Is this something your company does and if so, describe that process.
  4. What sets apart the solutions that you offer for Reality Capture?
  5. Can you describe a successful workflow for using Reality Capture?
  6. How do you feel Reality Capture has revolutionized the AEC industry?
  7. What improvements in Reality Capture would you like to see and/or are working on in your research and development?
  8. What applications do you think Reality Capture works best for and also those for which it does not work well for in providing 3D model information?
  9. Please include customer stories and/or customers who are using the technology who would provide quotes and stories, photos, and videos, and the names and titles of company representatives providing quotes.
  10. Are your Reality Capture technologies used more in certain countries than in others? Please describe interest and why you think certain locations are using more Reality Capture.
  11. Provide images or videos of product use, no logos or headshots please.

Please have completed questionnaire and accompanying materials to me by March 10, 2018. Thank you for participating. Susan.smith@ibsystems.com
