2019 Release of MicroSurvey CAD Employs the Latest IntelliCAD 9 Platform

December 13th, 2018 by Susan Smith

Hexagon-owned MicroSurvey CAD 2019 is built on the latest IntelliCAD 9 platform with improvements such as:

  • natively read and write AutoCAD® 2018 and 2019 .dwg files;
  • import Revit® and IFC BIM
    models;
  • many new drafting tools including Arc-Aligned Text and Reference Lines.

MicroSurvey CAD 2019 also provides streamlined workflows for point cloud users; Artisan 3D Rendering; a new workspace for MicroSurvey Point Prep users; and many more features. MicroSurvey CAD is used worldwide by land surveying and civil engineering professionals.

Morgan Worobec Technical Sales, Central Territory and Jeran Hopfe of marketing teamed up to answer questions for AECCafe Voice  about the latest release.

How long has MicroSurvey CAD been around?

Microsurvey was started in 1985, became Microsurvey Software International in 1986, and was purchased by Hexagon of Sweden in 2012. Hexagon is a very large company with over 12,000 employees worldwide, generating approximately $3.5 billion USD of revenue annually. Hexagon also owns Leica Geosystems, who is renowned for being the leading producer of high quality survey hardware; we frequently collaborate with Leica Geosystems in our products, both presently and historically.

Where are most of your users geographically located?

Microsurvey has customers all over the world. We create software for surveyors, engineers, and construction workers; we also produce a whole line of products for people in the public safety sector and law enforcement. Our largest user base is within North America, particularly in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, California, Washington & Texas.

Since the IntelliCAD 9 product includes full support for AutoCAD 2018/2019 .dwg files, Revit and IFC BIM Models, do most of your customers also use AutoCAD and Revit?

Surveyors quite often fill an intermediary role between engineers and tradespeople, and as such, work together with other firms to complete a project.  Architects, civil engineers, and earthworks contractors who collaborate with surveyors may all use differing forms of software, and it would not make sense to produce a package that did not work with other products that are readily used across the industry. Most of our customers use or are familiar with both AutoCAD and Microsurvey CAD, and usually have no problem switching between the two, depending on the job they are doing, or what their clients’ requirements may entail.

What benefits do customers derive from using MicroSurvey CAD over AutoCAD?

Microsurvey has its own set of intelligent tools made by surveyors who know the business, intended to increase efficiency through smooth, logically connected workflows that are free of clutter.  These tools are essential to the daily operations of surveyors, who may have previously felt that they were lacking a product that was designed with their needs in mind.  The learning curve for an AutoCAD user to begin using Microsurvey CAD is gradual, and commands feel familiar within our software.  Our industry-leading technical support and training courses will ensure you are never left on your own to navigate issues, and perpetual licensing (non-subscription based ownership) guarantees that you own the product that you paid for; if you like the version you have, you can use it as long as you like.

What do you feel are the  most important new features of this latest release?

I feel that the most important new features are the REVIT/BIM compatibility and the LGS point cloud import. With the new BIM compatibility, you can now take an architectural or engineered drawing of this format, manipulate it, and use its stored data to easily create layout files for your field crews, maintaining your participation in the BIM process. We have also made some great improvements to point cloud use in Microsurvey CAD, including support for Leica’s new LGS format.  This format imports nearly instantaneously, and does not require interaction with any external programs, increasing the speed and usability of point clouds.

The downloadable version will run for 30 days as a full version. You can create jobs, download from data collectors, process traverses, calculate contours or volumes, and plot finished results. FREE training movies are shipped to you when you purchase.

The download includes Studio, Ultimate, Premium, Standard, and Basic editions.

Features include:

IntelliCAD 9

Intellicad 9 which includes full support for AutoCAD 2018/2019 .dwg files, import Revit and IFC BIM models, many new commands, tons of bug fixes, and more.

Point Prep Workspace:

Point Prep Workspace to configure MicroSurvey CAD with the look and feel of MicroSurvey Point Prep and includes powerful new BIM and AEC Tools.

Artisan Rendering:

Artisan Rendering to generate near-photorealistic renderings of your drawing by applying textured materials, lighting, shadows, reflections, backgrounds and more.

Point Cloud Engine updated to Leica EpcA 3.2 which Supports Leica Cyclone 9.3, Leica JetStream 1.5 and Leica Cyclone REGISTER 360 1.5; automatic regeneration of Cyclone point clouds on view changes, without running the CWREGEN command
